Iceland volcano from Space: The Dramatic Ash Plume Engulfing Britain and 'Nightmarish Face' Seen From Above [Pics in URL] CLAIRE BATES 16th April 2010
Created deep in the volcanic bowels of Iceland, this is the dramatic plume of ash engulfing the UK as seen from space. The hazy cloud spewing from the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano was captured by the Modis instrument on board Nasa's Terra and Aqua satellites, which view the entire Earth's surface once every two days. Modis was designed to respond rapidly so it can track natural disasters such as floods and forest fires in near real time.
The plume from the Icelandic volcano - seen as a grey-brown streak drifting across the middle of the image - is visible from space. It was imaged by the Modis instruments on two Nasa satellites as it blew towards the Shetland Islands In this natural-colour image taken yesterday, we can see the volcanic plume moving south-easterly from southern Iceland. It blows past the Faroe Islands and arcs slightly towards the north near the Shetland Islands. The tan hue indicates a fairly high ash content.
The spread of volcanic ash prompted authorities in the UK, Ireland, France, and Scandinavia to close airspace over their countries. The airspace closure had a ripple effect, disrupting flights all over the world. Unlike the soft, fluffy material that results from burned vegetation, volcanic ash consists of tiny jagged particles of rock. (snip)
It is not known how long the airspace closures will last because it depends on how long the volcano continues to erupt as well as wind direction. The scream: A radar image shows the crater of Eyjafjallajokull in southeast Iceland, which looks like the nightmarish face painted by Edvard Munch

Thank you.
You’re welcome.
I did not note that the 3rd type of source—and one of the ones I can’t get very specific about . . . this latest msg is purportedly originated from a serious, well placed financial insider.
grumble...grumble...
Still can't say it.
Hows about henceforth we just refer to it as that bloody volcano? ;)

I was curious if you had by chance heard anything about the wind picking up — just in general in the Northern Hemisphere? We’ve been having some strong wind the last couple days, and cold temps. Just curious if there was any relation to the volcano...

Sorry to hear of your troubles! I imagine there are a ton of people in your situation. I’ll say some prayers for you — and everyone else, too.
Hey... Just imagine you’ve gone back in time and you’re in London around the start of the 20th century! Do some old-fashioned sightseeing — especially in White Chapel and you’ll know what it was like back when it was coal in the air! ;)
Seriously, hope you both are able to get home soon.
Most excellent!
[Bowing to your expertise!]
Odd isn’t it that its first eruption occurred on March 20, 2010...now...thinking cap on...what happened that day??? Hmmm...and the following day, Monday, March 21, 2010, didn’t a certain ‘narcisist in chief’ go before a microphone, and with a band of laughing co-conspirators MOCK that ‘when he woke up, the sun was shining, birds were singing, and peiple could still go to their own doctors, (que uproarious laughter from his adoring pols).
Kinda like ‘sudden’ blizzards in DC and Hopenhagen (when GolBull Warming summits were to be held).
The Almighty does have a sense of humor, smacking down the mere mortals who claim their control of HIS planet.
I saw on Drudge that Grahamnesty, LIEberman et al “plan” for their ‘drop’ of the Climate Control Cap and Trade Bill next Monday, April 26. Any guesses on the next volcano to “blow” to defeat this one?
Thanks.
I come to London once a month for a week at a time. Lived in London and in Lincoln, so, sadly, this is no great adventure to be in the UK. I have plenty of British friends so I have people to see and such. Went to Harrods today, to their Chocolate Bar on the second floor, had my usual thick melted chocolate drink. Superb.
Cheers.
I am happy someone is laughing. . .seriously, I would be laughing, too, if I was you. I am moving beyond frustration to amusement over this whole thing.
;-)
Hey, will they let us go on one of those planes with you if we are very very good?
I think this is my third trip. I love it!! ANd we were in Hyde Park all morning and the birds were incredible. If you walk by, come in,,we are Grahams on 14th floor. We leave for Scotland in the AM on the train,,dreading going up to Kings Crossing/St Pancras. But Scotland looking good,,maybe fly home from Glasgow if they clear.
I will certainly ask the question!
Oh I would so love lunch,,we are on a 12 train to York and then to Edinburgh but if you are around this afternoon we can meet for coffee ,,I think you are very close. Just call the Cavendish and ask for Graham!
May do.
Would it work if I dropped by, say, 1630hrs, as I am with friends right now.
