To a certain extent, and I’m not saying this to pick on you or anybody else, but there is a real, significant, possibly fatal difference between conception and reality.

Grow a garden?
I imagine there are some people out there with enough land, enough seed stored, enough southern exposure, etc that they could grow a garden and live off it... until about October...

The ONLY thing most people should think about garden-wise is growing as much as possible to supplement what you have stored.

Same goes for water. Fortunately, I live in the soggiest part of the world, I do have quite a bit of water stored, and more is available.
But if I lived in New Mexico or Arizona or Texas or any of the warmer, drier places, I would do EVERYTHING POSSIBLE to store AS MUCH WATER AS I POSSIBLY COULD!

It’s hard to say how to prepare because different events need different plans.
But if it is a significant type of event, whether it’s EMP, or BIO attack, or fuel supply, or something that is violently disruptive, I would imagine it would not take very long for the whole mess to go down the tubes. How long ca we expect the power to stay on if there was a bio attack and everybody (who had survived it) was hunkered down and not going out to fix power lines no matter what?

Not long I would bet.

Depends on where you live. Some of us can garden year-round, and when you know how to freeze, can and dehydrate the stuff, you eat year-round regardless.

Who do you want inhabiting this country, people like me, or uneducated boobs? There are tons of us ‘out there in fly-over’ that will survive perfectly fine when the government goes bust. And, we’re normal Americans, military families. We’ll be there, we’re home-schooling, we’ve raised conservative kids. There are more of us than them. That’s why they’re lashing out against the tea-party. The libs are scared fecal-less. And talk radio is in a boom. Deep down, libs know we’re right, and they can’t convince the rest of the country to their point of view. Americans are Americans, we’re not Europeans, we fled that. We fought King George, we will BEAT king bambi. Isn’t it kind of fun to be on the winning side of LIBERTY! I’m so ready to ‘bring it on’, liberty vs tyranny.

No matter what, liberty will win.

No one can have what they alone need for all the different scenarios that are possible. It’s romantic to think that you can survive off the land, hunting deer, fishing out trout, growing a garden. But everybody and their mother will be doing the same. Deer and fish will become extinct, and your garden won’t make it to harvest. Prepare, but pray it never comes to that.

Yep, water and canned food works better than gardens. Gardens are OK to supplement, but canned food is where it's at...Last for years if stored right too.

Canned food is what feeds armies.

That's when you learn to dehydrate any excess produce. Tomatoes and acid fruits can be canned in a solar oven.
