Up to 25,000 died in Dresden's WWII bombing - report

Up to 25,000 people died in the Allied bombing of Dresden during World War II - fewer than often estimated, an official German report has concluded.

The Dresden Historians' Commission published its report after five years of research into the 13-15 February 1945 air raid by Britain and the US.

The study was aimed at ending an ongoing debate on the number of casualties in the German city.

Germany's far-right groups claim that up to 500,000 people died.

They say the bombing - which unleashed a firestorm in the historic city when Nazi Germany was already close to defeat - constituted a war crime.

Critics say there was no military reason for it, but others argue that Dresden was an important logistical point close behind German lines, as the Soviet Army approached from the east.

However that very statement indicates that Germany had not yet surrendered. If you want us to stop bombing the answer is easy. Stop shooting at us. So long as you continue to shoot at us we will drop bombs on you. If that is a problem, don't start wars.

At Coventry, twelve armaments factories and much of the city center, including its 14th-century cathedral were destroyed. Somewhere between 500 and 800 people were killed and 865 were injured. The death toll was never conclusively established because of the intensity of the bombing and the resultant infernos, which left little trace of many victims. Like countless others, I have been to Coventry Cathedral and stood at its ruined center, looking up at the sky where the ancient vaulted roof once sat before the moonlit night of 14 November 1940. It is a sobering experience.

Add to that Operation Keelhaul >>

i don’t see many references to this on the FR, it’s too bad people don’t want to remember or know the truth.
