The 4-year-old daughter of Jesse Browning -- one of the stars of The History Channel's "Ax Men" -- died tragically yesterday in Oregon after being mauled by one of the family's pet Rottweilers.

Jesse -- whose father owns the "Browning Logging" company featured on the show -- called 911 around 1 PM after the dog attacked his daughter Ashlynn at the family home, this according to Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin.

We're told Ashlynn was airlifted to the Oregon Health and Science University Hospital in Portland shortly after the attack ... but was pronounced dead on arrival.

We're told cops are investigating the incident.

Sheriff Bergin tells TMZ the dog involved in the attack -- along with another Rottweiler owned by the family -- was taken to a nearby animal shelter for a mandatory hold.

How tragic. This is an enjoyable show, much like Deadliest Catch that also suffered a loss recently.

The family will be given three options on the fate of their dogs -- they can take them back into the home (with restrictions), adopt the dogs out to another family ... or choose to have them euthanized.

What??

“adopt the dogs out to another family”

Presumably one with tougher, less tasty children.

I know, I’m going to he||.

I like that show too. In last night’s episode he was saying the resaon he worked so hard was so he could care for his daughter - he’s a single father.

"What??

Not in my state, or any of the other states in which I'm familiar. Such an attack on the child would only result in one outcome for the animal, euthanasia.

It is TMZ, so I'd take that part of the report with a grain of salt.

I agree, I have never ever heard of this being an option, and I can’t imagine any rescue or animal control being willing to take the risk of the dog harming or killing again.

or choose to have them euthanized.

If it were MY dog, I would do it myself.

Prayers for him and his family.

Rottweilers and four year old children do not mix.

If you have a young child in your home and must have a dog, it is best if you have a breed of dog that is apt to maul your children to death.

Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Border Collies or any assortment of other heading or hunting dogs will not kill your kids.

I am curious about the involvement of the second dog.

I can't imagine wanting to bring the dog back home. But, years ago when I worked for a vet, we had a client who had 2 chows that mauled their child TWICE. The parents' attitude was, the kids know to stay out of the dogs' pen. Some people....

If it would have been me, the dog would have been dead by the time the cops got there. I once shot a stray Husky in the head for attacking my daughter when she that age.

Mandatory hold? I would have put that animal down within minutes.
