Lighting of 2010 Winter Olympic Flame Suffers Cauldron Malfunction in Vancouver - Video 2/12/10

Here is video from last night of the lighting of the Olympic Flame at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, Canada. Things did not go off smoothly, with one of the four legs of the Olympic Cauldron failing to emerge from the stadium floor. As a result, only three of four planned lighters of the flame were able to participate:

As Rick Hansen wheeled into the arena holding the torch, a collective gasp emerged as people assumed it would be him, only to be foiled when Catriona Le May Doan took the flame forward to Steve Nash, who ran it around to Nancy Greene Raine, who ran a solid leg towards The Great One, Wayne Gretzky.

He then moved around to a set spot, turned and faced the centre of the arena and, with the other relay runners all at similar spots, it dawned on us all... they would ALL light the flame.

Or at least, they would try. A malfunctioning hydraulic left Catriona Le May Doan holding a torch with nothing to light, looking very unimpressed. O Canada.

Thankfully, the one moment of failure on the night wasn't the final moment, as Gretzky quickly left the arena, hopped on the back of a pickup, and toured downtown Vancouver streets with the flame while assorted drunks and happy folks chased after him cheering in a moment of true West Coast Canadiana. . . . Thanks for posting that. I recorded it to watch it this morning. My DVR had the show going from 7:30 to midnight and I didn't extend the ending. So what time was the torch lit? It looks like about 12:03 because they were milling around waiting for it to rise from the floor when my recording ended.

In my younger days I was really into the Olympics. I was obsessed with training and made it to the national level in my chosen sport. I spent some time at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. It was that experience that caused me to realize that all was not as it seemed. For me it has only gotten more political, more media driven, and turned into more of a giant circus since that time.

On a positive note... almost anything that gets people outside doing physical activities is good. Pong didn’t come out until I was a teen, we only had the choice of three TV stations, and a computer was something that took up a whole room so we didn’t have those distractions.

I liked when they had the speed skating outdoors. Was cool to see the athletes battling the elements and human competition.

Speaking of speed skating... I hate that short track junk. Seems like it is a crap-shoot if one does/does not finish any of those competitions.

Tricked up "sports" like short track racing are the suck.

This overproduction is tiresome. The music and the Hollywood theatrics have little to do with athletics. Each Olympics gets more cringe-worthy.

There are rumors...RUMORS, mind you...that they MIGHT be at the Closing Ceremonies.

And I ALWAYS enjoy watching the Ceremonies. Vancouver gave it a good try, and i respect them for that.

kd lang...I could’ve done without.
