Hej, The Swedish Guy (Den Svenska Gubben/Killen?)! Välkommen! I am Charles Henrickson (Karl Henriksson), and I am the Swedish Ping List master here on Free Republic. When there is a Sweden-related thread posted, we send out a "ping" to notify the rest of the people on the list. I assume that I can add you to the list.

My grandparents came over to America from Bohuslän and settled in Chicago. My cousin now runs the Henriksson family farm in Torbal (between Tanumshede and Lur). I have spent a lot of time in Sweden visiting friends and relatives.

Var bor du i Sverige?

Ping to the Swedish Ping List.

Welcome to Free Republic! I have a question: “how do Swedes view SAAB now? Do they care about the company? Does Sweden have a lot of pride in regards to SAAB and Volvo? Thanks for the answer.

Thanks for the welcome :)
The answer to your questions are that Swedes in general have quite a lot of pride in regards to Saab and Volvo, while also feeling sad for the meagre state the companies are in today. When it comes to Saab specifically we feel hopeful that the Spyker deal will work out, but most people are a bit sceptic whether or not this will succeed in reviving Saab and make it competitive (Which it hasn't been in some 20 years).

I think it's supposed to be "ofta" which means "often".

Hmm, that doesn't work. From the context I thought it meant something like "How annoying!" or "That's disgusting!" I guess it will have to remain a mystery. Thanks anyway.

Thanks for the answer. I was having a bit of fun with you. My wife was a visiting Neurologist for six months at Lund. She found it to be a beautiful place.

All the Swedes moved to Minnesota

More Swedes actually moved to northern Illinois. Chicago, where my grandparents moved, is the Swedish capital of America. In 1920, there were more people born in Sweden living in Chicago than in any city in the world except Stockholm.

Does the Norwegian language sound like Swede with a very thick accent or is it more foreign to your ears? Danish?

Norwegian sounds almost like a Swedish dialect and you usually need a little bit of practice to fully understand what they are saying. Danish is a completely different matter. I've been living pretty close to Danemark for a year now and I can't understand a single word. I can read Danish though so it's just the pronunciation I don't get.

I think “Uff da!” is Norsk-American for what would be “Usch då!” på svenska.

What, if anything, does “Uffda!” mean in Swedish?

I think it's supposed to be "ofta" which means "often".

Not Swedish - It is Norwegian-American for "Oy Vey".

We’re good at ice... basically everything that is cold and wet.

I'm living in Southern California right now, we always find warm and wet satisfying.

In the US and UK children are growing up very sheltered in their day to day activities due to fears of “stranger danger”. Is Sweden the same, or do parents feel more comfortable letting their kids roam?

This obviously depends on a lot of different factors like are you living in the city, how old is your child etc. But usually kids go to school by themselves once they are six or maybe seven and are usually allowed to "roam". They are of course told the usual things like "don't talk to strangers" and "don't hop into a strangers car" but I wouldn't expect anything else from a worrying parent.

Is the old warship Vasa Haunted by ghostly sailors?

Would be cool if it was, but I'm guessing the only thing haunting it is bad conservation. If you wan't to read more about it their webpage is pretty good.

Hej, The Swedish Guy (Den Svenska (Gubben)/Killen?)! Välkommen!

Hej Karl! Tack så mycket för välkommnandet! I'm Fredrik and is currently living in Lund; I originally come from Stockholm. It would be great to be added to the Swedish ping list.
Can I add other pings by myself or do have to find the list master for those? Hmmm... I really need to find that newbie thread I was tipped about.

I know about the Swedes in N. Illinois. My great grandfather came over from Vastervik to Mystic, Iowa, where there was a Swedish settlement in 1902. He got off the train in Chicago and looked up some shirt tail relatives nearby, then came to S. Iowa where he was a brick mason.
