The missuse of “=” means this is not a math problem.

It was + that was misused. However, if you said

2 v 3 = 10 ... probably nobody would get it!

Or worse ... f(2,3) = 10

Anyway, it is definitely a math problem, but the phony + did slow me down, I was thinking it might be one of those "count the letters" things, or something.

( It took me exactly 1:59 :-)

Look just at the pattern of the numbers on the right side of the “=” sign as they relate to each other. Just because numbers are used in a sequencing problem doesn’t make it a valid math problem. The “=” sign was not correct in any of the equations.

Therefore, I disregard everything else, and come up with 9 + 7 = 16. :)

That's exactly right.

It doesn't matter how bad, incompetent, or deliberately obtuse, or fraudulent someone is at math; 9 + 7 is still 16.

It's a lot like global warming science in that regard.

Nahhhh........... It's 5.24148279 cubed

First I don't know how to make the superscript 3, so my apologies for not copying your statement exactly. Now to be more accurate, it is 5.24148279 cubed minus 0.000000130404574283121639

That proves that there is no answer to this riddle.

That proves that there is no answer to anything. Cf. Wittgenstein ... the rascal.

"His friend Friedrich Waismann, who had spent much of the 1930s unsuccessfully attempting to co-author a book with Wittgenstein, eventually accused him of "complete obscurantism" ...

Took me about a minute, but only because that E-Trade commercial from last night was on O-Really, and I got distracted.

Scouts Out! Cavalry Ho!

That was my first thought too...I was looking at the sequence and came up with 112.

What is even more interesting than the various discussions about the mechanics of the problem or the representation of it is that several dozen Freepers will spend more time on this trivial pursuit type of question rather than the more important ones of are there UFO's, or are we doomed on February 11 by Iran, or what is latest color of Pigosi's lipstick.

Oh, and if nobody has mentioned it, the answer is one gross.

I was looking at the sequence and came up with 112.

You did? I think we were meant for each other........

And to think that two astro-physicists met in the dark of night on a conservative website while trying to solve a complex mathmatical problem........

It must be Karma........

The = sign was used in its usual sense, once you realize that the + sign was used in a generalized sense.

How about this one?

2 + 3 = 1
7 + 2 = 5
6 + 5 = 3
8 + 4 = 12

9 + 7 = ?????

Here, the + sign has the meaning it holds in a widely practiced mathematical usage.

Greysard said: "That proves that there is no answer to this riddle. "

Use of the "+" isn't justified in the problem.

If you call a dog's tail a leg, how many legs does a dog have?

The answer is "four". A tail is not a leg, no matter what you call it.
