Divide each of the supposed “sums” by the actual sums of the two digits, then divide that number by the first digit in order to solve the final equation.

Huh???

How did you get that? I am sure if I spent more time I could come up with something other than 144, but with only 20 sec. that is all I could get.

Oh, heck - I should have known we were supposed to show our work. As usual I just blurted out the answer.

But it would have been a lot easier if they had just given us a hint as to what time the first train left Philadelphia . . .

I’m getting old.

I saw the pattern in about 15 seconds, as soon as I started considering 7+2=63, but then I saw I would have to multiply.

I stopped multiplying when I hit 50. I mean, I decided I didn’t want to do that anymore.

:)

I know, I know, my husband has a masters in applied math and he gets dizzy every time he asks me to explain what bass ackward route I took to arrive at the correct answer. I’m a Communications Major - what else can I say?

I'm not even a rocket scientist let alone a mathmatician............

I was just walking thru the neighborhood and thought I would take the test....

Guess I'd better keep on walking........

“120 isn’t all that great, is it?”

It is about the equivalent of a high school graduate.

2+3=5, 5*2=10
7+2=9, 9*7=63
6+5=11, 11*6=66
8+4=12, 12*8=96
9+7=16, 16*9=144

The missuse of “=” means this is not a math problem. It is a hybrid problem ... and yes, the next number in the table sequence would be 144 by the reasoning given. HOWEVER ...

It took only seconds to realize that it was
a self-styled intellectual who created this
“problem.”

Only self-styled intellectuals delight in
solving problems that are made up.

The self-styled intellectuals will then solve
their made up problems, call themselves
smart and then vote liberal

Then there are the heavy-weights of this
world who solve real problems. After they
solve them, they move to the next real
problem and vote conservative.

2 + 3 = 10 Multiplier is 5

7 + 2 = 63 Multiplier is 7

6 + 5 = 66 Multiplier is 6

8 + 4 = 96 Multiplier is 8

Then: 9 + 7 =???? (112) Multiplier is 7

So I looked at the pattern of multipliers:

5, 7, 6, 8, then 7 again.........(5....(?)...6...(?)...7...

See how easy that was?

There is an infinite number of correct answers. Here is the problem, rewritten:

f(2,3) = 10
f(7,2) = 63
f(6,5) = 66
f(8,4) = 96

The function f(x,y) defines a 3D surface. We are given four random points on that surface, and no other indication of what laws may govern this surface. It is visually obvious that you can fit any number of arbitrarily complex surfaces, described by all kinds of formulas, into those four points. That proves that there is no answer to this riddle.
