Studies using nerve cells suggest that one of these substances, called Heptapeptide 1, is the main agent responsible for triggering pain. The substance appears to work by interacting with certain receptors in the nerve cells, they suggest.Sounds like a good drug to use for use in interrogating terrorists.

I remember in of the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin novels (The Nutmeg of Consolation), Dr. Maturin was delighted to actually see a platypus and reached out to touch it- only get a dose of its venom. I think he was unconscious for some time. First I ever heard that those cute and odd little creatures are such badasses.

>> [platypus] is one of only a few venomous mammals
You mean there’s OTHER venomous mammals besides Platy? (Never mind the obvious ones, like Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clintoon, Martha Coakley. On second thought, those may be reptiles.)
Why yes, it turns out there ARE more!

Figuring out what substances can cause pain can also lead one to tempting molecular targets for PREVENTING pain.
