Downloading Instructions

I’m new at posting MP3 links, so please bear with me. I know there are easier ways to do this, but, as Dear Leader would say, they’re above my pay-grade ;) So here goes:

LEFT-click the links (or right-click and choose “open in new window”—“saving target as” won’t work)

Once you’re at the host's page, click the Download This File button.

Enter the 4-digit code in the space provided.

Then choose Save at the prompt.

That’s it. All songs are FREE and safe to download. Enjoy!

And so American Idol returns to entertain and torment us for another season.

T’is nice to have one of my images immortalized in the lead image (Drama!). Much appreciated. And to stop Lil’Freep’s attempt at a three-peat will be a memory I will cherish until my dying days. ;-)

So what has been going since since we left off after Kris Allen’s win? Well, we have releases by Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, Danny Gokey, and Allison Iraheta.

Kris’ album, predictably, arrived with not too much fanfare. Adam, to the shock of nobody, came out in Rolling Stone magazine, released some songs, and all people could talk about was his appalling and clumsy performance at some awards show. Danny, to some surprise, signed with a country label. And Allison has arrived with her teen-rock album. So far of the singles I’ve heard, I like Allison’s the best.

Season 7’s Brooke White also came out with her release. I liked her single “Radio Radio” (she was a favorite of mine from that season, so all is well in that department). Then we have the comeback return of Katharine McPhee, who for some reason, chopped off her lovely brunette hair and has gone for a short blonde cut. Do not like.

Well, since the gay icon Ellen DeGeneres isn’t due to arrive until after these tryouts, I am tempted to check the trainwrecks and potential idols that are performing tonight. Hopefully there’ll be a live internet feed available somewhere.

Sorry I am posting this so long after the show. I am taking classes on Tuesday nights this year and as a result have to watch the show after most everyone else. I have not looked at anyone else’s comments, so I am sure my ratings are probably far different from most.

I was not overly impressed tonight to be honest. It seemed to me that most of the girls mailed it in and played safe. There were some very talented singers, and some bright spots, but not a single “WOW” moment.

Enough rambling, on to the rankings and my excessive rambling there!:

1. Crystal Bowersox – Hand in my Pocket – First, Crystal is in a completely different league musically than any of the other female contestants. She is miles ahead in knowing who she his, performing, etc. However, as we have seen in the past, that can end up being a liability later in the season as she does not have a lot of room to grow, and historically the winner is someone who gets better and better each week. Now, this was not a blow your socks off performance by any means, but crystal showed that at least for now she is the best of the group.

2. Soibhan Magnus – Wicked Game – Soibhan really blew me away with this performance. She was already on my radar as a dark horse, but in my opinion she firmly stamped herself as one of the ones to watch tonight. Absolutely wonderful.

3. Michelle Delamore – Fallen – the surprise of the night for me. She has an extremely beautiful voice and the ability to use it. She is the complete package – looks, talent and charm. Michelle will be one to watch as the season progresses.

4. Katie Stevens – Feeling Good – A 17 year old sweetheart with a 30 year old voice. Was not totally blown away, but Katie has a lot of room to grow into that great voice. She is exactly the type that ends up going very far in the past. As she gets more and more comfortable I see her becoming a huge threat to win as the season progresses.

5. Katelyn Epperly – Oh Darling – Another pleasant surprise. I wasn’t sure what we would get from Katelyn. Wasn’t digging the look a whole lot, Kara was right on that, but vocally she was wonderful.

6. Lilly Scott – Fixing a Hole – She is this years ‘Unique’ performer. I can see Lilly fast becoming a Love her or Hate her contestant. I love her voice, but her quirkiness will keep her from advancing too far.

7. Didi Benami – The Way I Am – I really wanted to rate Didi higher. I absolutely love her voice, but I am sorry this song blew huge chunks of horribleness. Her performance was solid and I really dug her, but the song – oh god what a horrible song. Does anyone actually like this crap????

8. Haley Vaughn – I wanna Hold Your Hand – I loved the arrangement Haley did, I loved her bubbliness, but let’s be honest, she is a 16 yr old with a 16 year old voice. Best by far in a High School talent contest, but not ready for American Idol.

9. Lacy Brown – Landslide – this really tears me up to rate her this low. I thought parts of this performance were absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately there were a couple parts that were sheer torture, and as a result she is near the bottom this week.

10. Janell Wheeler – What About Love – Another one that had some great moments, but you could hear the nerves in her voice, and she never really brought in home. As a result she could be going home.

11. Paige Miles – All Right Now – this was just like the title, All Right. Not great, not horrible, but I am rating her here because she got the kiss of death at the end of the show, by the time the show was over I had already completely forgotten her performance. That does not bode well for Paige.

12. Ashley Rodriguez – Happy – this was just flat out bad. I found myself just wondering when the torture was going to end.

SHOULD GO HOME: Janell, Ashley

WILL GO HOME: Ashley. The second vote off will probably be Paige, but Janell, haley and Lacey all need to sweat it out.

Picked up Danny Gokey’s album “My best Days” this weekend. here is a little mini-review for those interested.

Personally, I love the album, I am a Danny Gokey fan and I like his voice. His voice is well suited for country music. That said, I have to be brutally honest here, there are a few gems on this album, but unless you are a Gokey fan or a big country music fan, there is little reason for you to buy this album. it is not going to be a huge crossover success ala Carrie Underwood. it is more in line with former Idol singers like Kellie Pickler, Bucky Covington, and Josh Gracin.

As I said, I like the album, and there are a few songs I really think could be successful for him, but bottom line - you could hear the same thing on hundreds of other country albums by myriad other singers in the country genre. There really is no huge breakout song or anything wonderously unique to grab the casual listener. This is just an album of mainstream country that does not transcend or push the boundaries of the genre in any direction.

Here are the nuggets that do exist in the album however:
1. I Will Not Say Goodbye - this is an homage to Danny’s wife, and anyone who knows the story or has lost a loved one will connect with this song. In my opinion this should be the next single released. It is a heart felt ballad and is Danny at his best. A truly wonderful song.

2. Get Away - this is the only true rollicking “country-rock” song on the album. it is a fun song and is very much in the Trace Atkins/Toby Kieth style of music. It stands out from the rest of the album and that is a good thing.

3. My Best Days are Ahead of Me - Nice upbeat tempo, and Danny sounds great. Just a cool feel good song.

4. Life On Ya - Another fun song that is just catchy enough to get you tapping your toes and singing along. Not sure it is good enough to be a charting single, but it is a fun song to listen to and sing along to in the car.

The rest of the album is a mish-mash of standard “new Country” songs that would be filler on albums all across the genre. Not bad songs by any means, Danny sounds great, but they are not great songs that would stand alone. I would rate a trio: “Like It’s A Bad Thing”, “It’s Only”, and “Be Somebody” as above average but not earth-shattering in any sense, and then the final three songs as MEH filler: “I Still Believe” (written by Kara DioGuardi by the way), “Tiny Life”, and “Crazy Not To”.

A good, not great, debut album for Danny. I like it, and recommend it to any and all Danny Gokey/Country Music fans; but would advise all others to listen to some of the songs online before buying it. Bottom line: I see middle of the road success along the lines of Bucky or Josh, maybe a little behind Kellie P.
