1 The Searchers
This John Ford Western chronicles the efforts of a Confederate veteran (Wayne) to track down the daughter of his murdered brother.
2 Rio Bravo
The Duke and Dean Martin are the pair of old friends at the heart of this Howard Hawks hit, in which the pair tussles with a local lawbreaker.
3 The Quiet Man
Wayne shows his softer side with this drama about the tempestuous affair between an Irish-American expat and an Irish woman.
4 The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
In this John Ford Western, Wayne stars as a rancher who pairs up with a law school grad (James Stewart) to take down the bad guy.
5 The Shootist
The actor's last movie ever finds Wayne starring opposite Lauren Bacall and James Stewart as a gunslinger dying of cancer.
6 True Grit
Wayne's Oscar-winning turn as aging sheriff Rooster Cogburn finds him trekking into Indian territory to avenge a man's death.
7 Stagecoach
For Wayne's breakout performance, he plays good-at-heart outlaw Ringo, who wins over a group of lawmen defending an east-bound train.
8 She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
This vivid, meditative Western finds Wayne portraying an aging war hero struggling with his impending retirement.
9 Red River
This early Howard Hawks Western stars Wayne as a rancher who battles mutiny among his men as he drives his cattle up the Chisholm Trail.
10 Sands of Iwo Jima
This 1949 war flick finds Wayne starring as John Stryker, a marine sergeant charged with leading his men to war.
'You follow them and I'll hunt you down and kill you. Every mother's son one of you.'
It is said that, that movie lead to the death of just about everyone in the case and crew. Almost all died of cancer. Seems they filmed in an area where nuclear wastes were bumped.
How about The Big Trail?
Didn’t see it listed but I have a soft spot for El Dorado. Plus Wake of the Red Witch, Hondo, Chisum, Angel and the Badman, The Comancheros... could go on and on. Even liked Hatari!
‘In Harm’s Way’, ‘True Grit’, “The Shootist’ and ‘The Searchers’.
Randolph Scott was much better than John Wayne.
Director Dick Powell, many of the actors (John Wayne, Susan Hayward, Pedro Armendariz, Thomas Gomez, Agnes Moorehead), and several of the crew members later fell victim to cancer, allegedly the result of producer Howard Hughes’ decision to lens the film on location near the atomic testing grounds in the Utah desert. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
My favorite co stars on Wayne films were Ward Bond, Pedro Armendariz, and Victor McLaughlin.
there is a b & w movie where the Duke plays a pharmicist from Boston visiting San Francisco to open a business.
The rich dude that ownes the town and his soon to be wed troph wife watch as the Duke makes his rounds in social parties......
.. after a while, the woman approaches the Duke and says
” I’ve been watchin you from afar, do you have ANY flaws ?”
the Duke looks, pauses, smiles and says “ Yes Ma’am, I tell the truth”
best line ever uttered
“Hondo” needs to be in there.
And “El Dorado” instead of “Rio Bravo”. Although the two movies had the same plot, Robert Mitchum playing the Dean Martin part in “El Dorado” made it a much better movie because the very talented Mitchum, unlike the over rated Martin, had to do some acting to play a drunk.
What were those lines at the start of the movie?
“That’s highway robbery!”
“I don’t think you’ll get a better offer today.”
And then a bit later and a few more times in the movie -
“Who are you?”
Great movie for the one liners.
I loved “El Dorado”, too bad it’s not in the list.
I’ve always enjoyed a good John Wayne movie and our son is a huge fan, with quite the collection. I don’t see “The sons of Katie Elder” listed, which is another of my favorites.
It wasn’t a top 10 movies but the only one I don’t see even mentioned is The Sons of Katie Elder. I used to enjoy watching that one wth my dad.
