Worst Films of All Time?

Posted on 01/06/2010 9:42:42 AM PST by ctdonath2

In the spirit of the current thread "Best Films of all Time?", I just have to ask for the other end of the spectrum.

I don't mean "Night of the Lupus", "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", or other standard bad/forgettable films. I don't mean just box-office flops. I want to see tour-de-force bad.

No “Eragon” was a ripoff of Dune, and the Lensman Series.

Favorite mst3k line from “Diabolique”:
“I hurl my skinniness at you!!”

Happy to say I never heard of those movies before your post. :)

David Lynch, the director, is so embarrassed by Dune that he refuses to discuss it in interviews.

When even the director thinks the movie is bad that's something.

‘The Lonely Guy’ - the first movie I ever walked out on
‘Speed Racer’ - thank goodness I didn’t pay money to see it
‘Twilight’ - PUKE! Even my daughter hated it and she read the books.

Who was cast in “It Runs in the Family”?
It was a sequel to a movie about childhood that was done 11 years before, so naturally none of the children could reprise their roles. They had a couple of Culkin kids cast as Ralphie and Randy. Ugh. Darren McGavin, who pretty much carried the original, was too old to play the Old Man. The only actor who reprised his/her role was the woman who played the schoolteacher. The script was horrible. (The Bumpuses were a lot better in the original when they were invisible.)

“Bless the Beasts and The Children” — Billy Mumy

“The Fifth Element” — Bruce Willis

Both...utterly...aweful

Reservoir Dogs: Aside from a couple quick flashbacks and one gross scene involving an ear, it’s a bunch of guys arguing in a warehouse, and somehow is one of the most violent movies ever.

Manos: The Hands of Fate.

Ah, yes. The MST3K version was hilarious, however.

Yes, Manos is the king of bad movies, period. No qualifications needed.

For anyone that hasn’t seen this abomination, it’s on youtube, just search for “Manos:The Hands of Fate”.

It will redefine what “bad” is for you.

Your suggestion of “History of the World, Part 2”, reminded me of the worst Mel Brooks movie, and a contender for worst of all time: Silent Movie. Even Burt Reynolds couldn’t save that movie.

Was there really a "History of the World, Pt2?" I thought it was just a part of Pt1!

And Silent Movie? The only thing in the movie that I thought was funny (and genius) was the only spoken word in the movie was "No!" by Marcel Marceau!

Highlander 2 is without a doubt the most mentioned movie on this thread. There may be genuinely worse ones that are much older, but in terms of something known today that had an absolutely great potential after the first film, I have never seen such a spectacular disaster of writing and acting. I could not have made it worse if I tried.

True that is a good scene.

My brother loves that movie for some reason, so when we shared a house in NM, he forced me to watch it a couple times.

"I can’t emphasize how utterly miserable (and moronic) that ending was. It was basically Frank Darabont giving the finger to anyone who bothered to sit through his movie. I don’t think an ending could be any worse than the ending of “The Mist”."

I have stacks upon stacks of Stephen King books in my library, with "The Mist" being my favorite short story of all his works. I was tickled pink when I heard they were making a movie of it.

However, when I heard they rewrote the ending to it, I was disgusted and swore not to watch it. When I heard that Stephen King himself loved it, endorsed it, and wished he had wrote it that way, I stopped reading his stuff. To hell with him.

The absolute worst hands down - Barton Fink, 2nd place The Big Lebowski, 3rd place any Austin Powers movie - I could not even sit through one of them and 4th place Avatar (what a stinker)

The worst rendition of a book to movie that I've seen is Dune.

The Dino DeLaurentis movie was pretty awful, however, I think that the worst rendition of a book to a movie award goes to "Starship Troopers." Granted, it's a really fun movie that I enjoyed immensely, but other than the title and some character names, the book and movie were pretty much two completely different stories!

Ultraviolet: good catch, good example of what I’m looking for here - serious attempt at being great and spectacular, and totally missing. The hyper-stylized imagery makes for great video demo material, but the story ... uhh ... once she opens the briefcase you know the movie is done.

For something like Dune, I have to forget the book and watch the movie on its own. About the only movie where they’re equal is 2001, because the script and book were written together.

In my experience the only other book that was done almost true on film was "The Maltese Falcon". The book is in my top five and so is the movie.
