Check Expectations for Apple's Tablet at the Door by Arik Hesseldahl Wednesday, December 30, 2009

If its engineers hew to recent history, Apple's tablet computer may look nothing like what the prognosticators foresee.

The speculative madness surrounding Apple's rumored tablet computer has finally reached its frothy peak.

Tech's chattering classes are obsessed with the unconfirmed product, which Apple (AAPL) may announce at an event in January, or February, or March, depending on which set of reports you adhere to. Apple, not surprisingly, is mum.

The hunger for information—and misguided speculation—reminds me of the mistaken prognosticating about the iPhone before its introduction three years ago. It may be time to step back and realize that Apple may uncork a product so surprising that the company again leaves the tech industry scrambling to catch up to its products' smooth operation and sleek design.

Documented facts about the tablet are few. This much we do know: In November 2008, Apple took control of the trademark name TabletMac from a company called Axiotron, which converts MacBook laptops into tablet computers running Apple's Mac OS X.

Sorry to burst your bubble but the only thing that Apple does that is 100% American is it marketing and advertising
When it comes to the iphone, ipod, tablets, laptops, the bulk of the R&D and engineering and electronics engineering is done in Taiwan. Which is pretty much the same for HP and Dell but varying from item to item. I mean Dell and HP sell a very wide range of things

Dennis hasn't a clue about the engineering in Apple products, just like he hasn't got a clue about the proper usage of periods.

He has no idea why Apple has several thousand tech patents, real patents, to its name... and gets several hundred new ones every year. He pulls these factoids he spouts out of his belly button just like many of these pundits, along with tons more belly button lint than most of them... but he thinks his lint is more valuable than their's.

He suffers from the worst case of Apple Derangement Syndrome ever seen.

So what is the Swordmaker prognostication?

I learned long ago not to prognosticate... but then ...

I think there will be two models... a 7" and a 10"... both touch screens and virtual keyboard that run an OS X variant with iPhone apps as well as Mac software. I expect Bluetooth, WiFi, and at least 3G connectivity if not 4G that will share your iPhone account. I would not be surprised if it had an iPhone/iPod touch docking station. Expect a battery life of at least 10-12 hours... or more.

Ives is a puffed up joke who takes care of the aesthetic side. What catches the eye of Apples feminized consumer base. He has zero to do with any electronics inside an Apple product except to tell the electronics boys — “Hey we need an on/off button over here and a brighter LCD illumination”

Ives couldn’t fix a dimmer switch in his own home

As far as Ives the design guru, he is pretty stingy with USB ports. I saw yr 13” laptop at Best Buy and could only find one. You had to flip a piece of plastic to get access to it. This USB flip piece is what makes you a design genius these days??? Plus the bottom is rounded making for less room for computer components.
If I were a design genius I would put in three USB ports. But Apple consumers emote over hare brained minimalist design because they are on the receiving end of an S&M relationship with the Jobs gangstas.

Jonathon Ives sez—
No USB ports for you! You miserable worm! Just be grateful and happy that we are willing to sell you a 13” laptop for $1400! Now go assume the position and grovel some more!

Bull~
More than half of Apple electronics is done in Taiwan not in house. And with the iphone—— 80-90% of the credit goes to the Taiwanese

But I do give credit to the Jobs gang for selling the shit out of their designed-in-Taiwan-made-in-China line of products and brainwashing the young skulls full of mush that they need to overpay for Apple products. Apples consumer base reminds me of the trained seals doing flips and jumps on command at SeaWorld and getting fish treats for a reward

And what electronics have YOU designed that sell millions of units. When you can do that, you can criticize. In the meantime. Shut up.

I design electronic circuitry as much as Jonathon Ives does. Ives is in charge of the aesthetics of Apple products. The outer look not the inner workings. The Ives Apple look is not pleasing to me but others must like it or the Apple stuff would not sell. Next time you see Ives ask him about the lack of USB ports on his 13” laptops

How many do you need. Dennis? The two USB 2.0 ports provided are sufficient to get you 8 USB ports with two hubs, if you need that many. Why have them permanently on the notebook? Connecting a portable device to many USB devices kind of defeats the purpose of portability.

Usability in design is more than tossing lots of ports and features at a the user, dennis. It's fitting the device to the purpose and the user. Apple understands that far better than any other computer maker. . . and you don't know what Ive is in charge of... not a clue.

Care to guess how many USB 2.0 ports the Dell Inspiron 13.3" laptop computer has?

Only Two!!! Same number as the $999 MacBook.

Oh, by the way, the total price for that Dell 13.3 inch Inspiron Notebook with Microsoft Works included free, configured as closely as possible to the basic MacBook, with a slightly slower 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, instead of the MacBook's 2.26GHz Core 2 Duo processor, and with definitely slower DDR2 800MHz DRAM, instead of the Macbook's DDR3 1066MHz RAM, is $1063.

It's MORE expensive than the faster, better equipped, basic MacBook! The total price for a basic Macbook with iLife'09 ($999) plus iWork'09 ($49), is only $1048!

Care to criticize some more, Dennis?

Oh, the HP dm3t Series 13.3 inch laptop, again, configured to try and match the hardware in the Macbook, with its fastest 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo processor (really slow), with 2GB of DDR3 (at least its got fast memory), Microsoft Works, Roxio Photoshow (emulates iPhoto), extended battery, and an EXTERNAL DVD burner (!), is $1096.98 after an instant $150 rebate.

It's got FOUR USB 2.0 ports.... so I'll give you that one.

The best bargain here is the MacBook... fastest memory, fastest processor, best hardware, most expandable, most and best software included... for the lowest price... and neither the HP nor the Dell comes with a Gigabit Ethernet port.

Definitely clueless. Apple design works so well because unlike the others they don't just concentrate on aesthetics. It's usability, aesthetics and engineering, all worked together.

One problem with USB is that with shrinking devices the host plug is starting to get a bit big.

Does Apple offer black laptops? All I see is white. If all you can get is white that’s absurd. I would never buy one

Not white.

As the Brits like to say: AL-U-MINIUM

Carved from a single block of aluminum, MacBook Pro is slim, light, and durable enough to take anywhere.

I just figured you had your ear to the ground more than I on this issue. I never believe rumors about Apple products anymore but this one had details about manufacturing orders and such. We’ll see soon. What’s your guess on a price range assuming your non-prognosticating prognostication is correct?

Actually, this is the first reasonable thing you've written in this thread. If YOU don't like the color choice, YOU are free not to buy one. But it is not an indicator of the overall quality, value or innovation in Apple products.

Well, with the exception of the "absurd" line. What if I want an white laptop from Lenovo? What, they don't make them? Absurd! More valid would be to complain that Lenovo, Acer, HP, etc., don't make machined aluminum laptops, because that's an actual valuable feature -- exclusive to Apple, of course.

But come to think of it, it might be interesting to disassemble an aluminum notebook and have it chemically colored and reassembled. It's not that difficult overall, just clean it, dunk it and dry it off. You can't paint or powder-coat, because then you'd fill-in the micro-holes Apple has drilled in some places.

That might be an interesting service to offer, although the disassembly would probably invalidate the warranty.

Ive is in charge of far more than the outward aesthetics. It’s his job to make sure everything can be packaged together and work, and be manufactured. Industrial design, inside and out.

In a recent interview he was talking about all the nooks and crannies and channels in a machined aluminum laptop enclosure. He (well, he and his team) designs all of those to fit with the internal electronics, which are in turn designed to fit the enclosure.

Ive’s brilliance is form and function together so you don’t even notice the brilliant design behind it. It’s directly in opposition to HP and the like, who like to put flashy plastic (”Look, I have design!”) over a basic box, adding nothing to the actual function or use.

You must be blind. Apple has exactly ONE white laptop. The rest are aircraft aluminum machined out of a single block of aircraft grade aluminum. You can get form fitting cases in any color or pattern you want. . . including one with custom pictures.

The conventional wisdom says $600. I would guess $600 for the 7" and $1000 for the 10".

You are correct. At Best Buy the only laptop I picked up and handled and looked for ports and connectors on was the white 13” laptop. So my remark was incorrect. All the iMacs were white so I that influenced my remark. Aluminum is a very bad idea for laptops but I’m not going to get into why.
