My Irish Wolfhound was the same way. When he barked, there was no mistaking which dog was barking and there was always something there. He didn't bark at ghosts. His miniture poodle-mix buddy on the other hand barked at everything. We ignored him unless the big guy joined in.
She's usually very quiet but last night she barked relentlessly for hours.
I think many dog owners just tune out the barking. When I'm fed up with my Poobear, SHUT UP works too. He retreats to his bed always with his ears tuned in for the next delivery truck. I really think these little guys just get bored. A good long walk and they quiet down nicely.
Gotta love ‘em!
“6. Norwegian elkhound
I grew up with them and this is BS”
Generally, that is true. My friend had one for 12-13 years and it rarely barked. However — I once volunteered to babysit the dog for a week when it was about 6 months old. Big mistake. It howled for Daddy all freaking night! No amount of petting, treats or death threats would silence the thing. I was contemplating murder until my friend’s brother took pity on me and picked up the dog, saying he could control it. Yeah, right. After another night of howling, the dog went to a kennel.
Did he quit moving about the same time???
LOL. Nope, those dogs are running fools.
LOL. They can be a little hard headed. The only time I could say ours was noisy was when he was a pup maybe 2 to 3 months. We lived on the coast of Northern Calif and got him from inland. He had never seen rain before and was very vocal about it the first night it rained. All night long. Instead of getting out of it he stood and stared up and barked and howled. After that first rain never had another problem.
Thanks Dolly. Interesting.
I know! She knows I want a Shiba Inu, Basenji or a New Guinea Singing dog.
I have a very vocal miniature poodle. He talks to me quite a bit, and most of the time I can understand what he wants.
My vote is for the Irish Wolfhound. They are LOUD! And they would rather BARK at 2 in the morning (with their incredibly loud voices), than sleep.
How in heaven’s name did they pass by the Pomeranian?
Incessant yappity yap yap yap.
Beagles are literally Born to Bark. it’s what they do, and part of their job. The lapdogs just bark to be a pain.
How MinPins aren’t on that list is beyond me. I work at a Vet’s office, they are all so yippy when they come in.
I have a 13-year-old Shiba. Great dog. He’s loud when he wants to be but gives me a welcome home howl most often. Having said that, Bassett Hounds are pretty annoying barkers. Had neighbors with two of them. Yikes.
Go ahead. I don't get offended by good natured ribbing. (Of course, now that you've made the point I will have already gone through the jabs in my thoughts and the impact will be minimal) &^)
Now that is funny.......
Yeah, Bassets can be like that. I had a neighbor across the street that had 4 of them. Anytime there was a siren, we had the Basset Barber Shop Quartet going off. I actually didn’t mind that, though. It was always good for a laugh.
Someone, somewhere is going to make a video of 4 Bassets singing Bohemian Rhapsody, and it will be hilarious.
