Britain is sick of the American cult of Halloween
The Telegraph ^ | 10/30/2009 | Damian Thompson

Posted on 10/30/2009 10:34:37 AM PDT by markomalley

This is the only time of year when I become seriously anti-American. Our national media, retailers and brainwashed children have all been sucked in to the American cult of Halloween, which demands that shops deck out their windows with feeble pumpkin displays – and your doorbell is rung every five minutes by infants dressed as vampires, demanding presents.

I can live with with “the commercialisation of Christmas”, because at least the cult of Xmas wasn’t foisted on us by another country, and as I recall it was even tackier 30 years ago than it is now. But the modern Halloween, although it marks a perfectly respectable (and depressing) event in the Christian calendar, was created by Americans. Over in the States, an entire nation throws itself into a fancy dress party with a naive enthusiasm that comes naturally to Yanks. We, on the other hand, have only recently adopted Halloween, and we do it self-consciously, like embarrassed guests forced to play charades by a tyrannically cheerful host.

Americans have no standing to criticize any European nation on beer. Our ice cold, tasteless, weak, yellow barley soda is an abomination.

You are way behind the times, my friend. The good ol' USA has undergone quite a beer renaissance in the last 15 years or so, and there are now many, many good, thick, rich, dark beers to choose from in this country, mostly microbrews, but there is no reason that any poor son of a gun should have to drink Budweiser anymore.

As my mom always used to say it was the only holiday designed for kids to just have some fun

and yeah for all the folks that want to tell me how bad it is -—don’t

That’s another story altogether. Amongst my precious belgians I have some Breckenridge Small Batch 471 IPA, DFH 90 minute IPA and Anchor Steam in the fridge.

As a kid I spent quite a lot of time in England. There was no Halloween then, just Guy Fawkes Day, which had its own charm, including a few fireworks. But it was definitely disappointing for a kid to miss out on the candy, pumpkins, etc. I am mystified as to how Halloween could have spread so thoroughly to England.

Sean’s rant yesterday about him not liking Halloween because trick or treating is liberal by nature was ridiculous.

If you don’t want to hand out candy, don’t hand out candy. Sheesh.

What a scrooge. I never thought he was very smart. Perhaps if the threats were more serious he would have a point. But I don't think my very young son, who loves Halloween, even knows anything about that.

others say that since the Romans never conquered the Celts (Ireland and Scotland) there was no mingling of cultures

Those were the only Celts the Romans didn't conquer. The rest of Britain and all of Gaul were inhabited by Celts who Julius and Claudius Caesar conquered. Also some Celts way over in Asia Minor, the Galatians. Even most of the people of Iberia were known as Celtiberians because of their Celtic background.

The Romans tried to take over Scotland and bounced, probably because they decided it wasn't worth the trouble. They never showed any interest in Ireland.

No, he doesn’t strike me as an intellegent person either. I mean he’s not an idiot or anything, but sometimes just comes across that way.

I think liberal mindsets are so far off, I hope my children don’t grow up that way. However I don’t see tradition that has been around for years and years is anything indoctrination of a liberal mindset.

Frankly, we don’t go trick or treating because so many people don’t do it and it’s a two hour treck for three houses. I’d rather donate to a church (usually canned goods for their pantry) and take the kids to a fall festival.

The author of this article need not worry, I’m sure the Muslims will put a stop to Halloween, Christmas and other holidays that aren’t on the Muslim calendar any day now. Sheesh! Breat Britian is being taken over and this is what they Whine about??!!

Love that episode of NCIS that happens on Halloween.

David McCallum is such a cutie. He looks better now then he did when he was on The Man From UNCLE.

I am sick of the fact that Halloween has gone from a nice children's holiday in my youth to adult woman dress like a whore day.

While were at it, WTF should I celebrate St. Patrick's Day and Cinco De Mayo, unless I wanted to enrich bar owners even more than I usually do?

“Candy day is all American.”

That’s it, the crotchety Brit is probably jealous because he can’t eat candy with his typical bad Brit teeth.

What are you talking about? American cult? Just where do you think we got it? Who the he** burned all those witches in the dark ages? Americans hung about 19 witches in all, and they weren’t Americans then, they were still British subjects. Britain burn thousands of witches back in the day. We get Halloween from All Hallows Eve, a British pagan ritual. So get out of here with the “American Cult” crap. Blame your country for shipping it to America first.

He was having marriage problems in those days. Charles Bronson was stealing his wife from him. He remarried in 1967 and is still presumably happily married to this day to that same lady. Btw he is as far as I know one of those rare conservative actors.

Sorry, you are too late to convince me. When I lived in Los Angeles for a few years in the late 1970’s, I met a person who owned the local wicca store and was high priestess of a coven. October 31st was their biggest celebration.

She was fairly well-known, read the cards for a few celebrities. Thankfully, I never got involved with the group, though I did learn about reading the cards. The Lord had mercy on me and saved me a couple of years later, showed me the error of my ways-—for which I am FOREVER GRATEFUL!

Okay, let me get this straight:
You Britains are increasingly empowering the Muslims to change your heritage and dictate how your system should work, but you have a problem with our little party costumes?

Geeze, I never ever thought I would think so little of the UK and so much of France, who is kicking out (deporting) the Muslim hoard in the attempt to maintain their heritage.

You Britains have become MAJOR a** pu**ies. I no longer care to associate with you nor protect you. Enjoy your advanced "political correctness". Don't ask the US to defend you again...you're just too damn stupid to survive.

Forgot to say, "Happy Halloween". Although it may have dark origins, it has changed into just a time for kids and some adults to have some fun. What the frig is your problem?

The World may be an ugly place, but if you can lighten up for just a few days during the year, so what? Halloween is now nothing more than a "St. Patrick's Day" - just a time to party. Lighten up.

Go ahead, keep insulting the people who kept you from speaking German, TWICE!
