For a myriad of reasons, I have spent the last few months watching a movie most every weeknight. I have finally gotten my moneys worth from my Netflix account.
But, lately I have had trouble finding movies I think I will like. I scour Netflix and am having a hard time finding movies that interest me, though I know they are out there.
My interest runs from war movies to action flicks to quirky indy films to foreign art things.
Some of my favorite movies I have seen the past few months are Defiance, all of the Sean Connery Bond films, Sleeper, The Right Stuff, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Riding Giants, a Hard Days Night, and a few foreign artsy films whose names I dont recall.
By far my favorite movie I have seen lately is Everything is Illuminated.
I have no interest in horror flicks, romance movies, teen gross out flicks or most movies made in the 1960s.
Could anyone be so kind as to suggest a good movie or two?
Thanks
quirky indy: Primer. Plan on watching it with someone at least twice if not three times.
Secondhand Lions, The Man Who Knew Too Little, The Dark Knight, Dark City, Get Smart, the Bourne movies, Stranger Than Fiction, Last Supper.
Oh, and that’s the 1950 Carrie, NOT the ‘70’s blood fest.
I should also mention the Bad Seed, which is not really horror.
WW2: Kelly’s Heroes, The Enemy Below, Das Boot (directors cut)
The Great escape, Hell is for heroes,In Harm’s way, None but the brave, Run silent run deep,Paths of glory (ww1 really)
Check these 60’ish out: The Manchurian candidate, The Tony Rome movies,The Sand Pebbles, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, Oceans Eleven,
Action types: A Fist full of dollars and its sequels, The Eiger Sanction, The Die Hard series, Aliens 1 and 2,
Anything by Akira Kurosawa for your foreign kick.
Kinda out there: The Ninth configuration, Eraserhead, http://366weirdmovies.com/, well let me think hehe theres a start
The problem is, most of my favorite movies have the letters ‘XXX’ and the words ‘Exreme’ and ‘Hardcore’ featured on the box.
The Prestige, Sling Blade, Minority Report.
I highly recommend “The Hurt Locker” 2008. It is about explosive ordnance disposal technicians in Iraq. Very well done movie. Very realistic from a technical standpoint. A little political BS here and there but overall a very good movie about our military.
I saw a promo yesterday for a good one coming out next month.
“Pirate Radio” appears to be about the offshore pirate radio stations like Radio London and Radio Caroline that were popular in the UK during the BBC monopoly days of the 1960’s.
I especially like one little clip of dialogue they gave...
“They can’t shut us down”
“Of course they can shut us down! Don’t you know, that’s one thing Governments absolutely hate, people exercising freedom.”
I think I am going to make it a point to catch this one.
It should be a purchase, not a rental.
I got mine from Santa when it was released and I just bought the Blu Ray version from Amazon. What a difference!
If you like quirky indie films, try “A Life Less Ordinary” with Ewan MacGregor, Cameron Diaz, and Holly Hunter.
Second Hand Lions
I can’t wait to see it in Blu-ray. Of course, first I’ll need a Blu-ray player, and an LCD to connect to it.
A FReeper friend of ours sent us Katyn on DVD and a wonderful little TV miniseries called TAJEMNICA.
It is the Poles version of one of their spies posing as a Nazi in WWII. At least one of the actors from KATYN are also in this. It’s four DVDs but if you can find it somewhere I’d recommend it.
I've never talked to anyone who had heard of it and didn't like it.
Another good foreign film is "Adam's Apples".
I saw a movie the other night starring Ben Stiller and Bill Pullman that was good...."Zero Effect".
"Quarantine" is a good zombie movie.
LIVES OF OTHERS
A German movie, about a Stasi-agent secretely monitoring a dissident in Communist east Germany, who develops some sympathy for his target.
Very well done.
“The Peacekeeper” with George Clooney and Nicole Kidman. It was made before 9/11 and Iraq so it is mostly devoid of PC crapola.
Great military thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Clooney is pretty good.
