The U.S. government should abolish its sanctioning of marriage, argued Cass Sunstein, President Obama's regulatory czar.

“If there is no marriage, it would be very easy for the state to claim wardship of all children.”
Do you know how many children are born out of wedlock every year? Do you realize how ridiculous your post reads?
“And there you have it - “legal status” for civil unions between anyone.”
Okay.
“We are in the world ... not of the world.”
And yet many (on this “conservative” forum) want to keep the givernment involved in our Holy matrimony. Is that being “in it” or “of it?”
“Because marriage has significant legal ramifications.”
So marriage never had significant legal ramifications prior to the givernment sticking it’s nose in?
Well, I really like my cat too. But yes, I will register at Petsmart - unless I decide to marry the local Rugby team (all of them). Then where will I go?

Government has "stuck its nose in," for about as long as there have been marriages.

I think you’d have to define “about as long.”
Legal marriage arrangements are described in Genesis...
Is marriage a God given right?
I believe it was ordained by God.
Nevertheless ... whether or not it is ordained by God, marriage has also been a legal/government matter for a very, very long time, in pretty much every culture.
That's just the nature of the beast. Why does it bother you so much?
I’m going to get married next year, I’d like as little state involvement as possible. God, this might well be the only issue that I am stubbornly libertarian on. I have nailed down that there is no law against a traditional or “non-givernment sponsored wedding” but try finding a clergyman or woman that will perform the ceremony w/o the states permission to wed.....it isn’t easy.
My own Pastor is not comfortable with the idea of just performing the ceremony without the state giving it’s permission....I asked him if he’d require permission to perform communion and he just kind of chuckled.
The problem with your "no government" hopes, is that there are all manner of legal issues involved in a marriage, the first of which is that you're combining ownership -- or not -- of your assets. Your tax status changes. If you have kids, their existence has legal ramifications (birth certificate, for example).
You can't just pretend that the community has no interest in your mating practices. What you do, affects those around you.
“Just a gentle reminder, FRiend ... “givernment” is cute the first time. But only the first time.”
Sorry, “All hail gOvernment!”

Pre-nup.
“Your tax status changes.”
Not if you have a non-gOvernment recognized wedding.

Mine are grown, hers is almost grown and we cannot have more.
“You can’t just pretend that the community has no interest in your mating practices.”
Interest? What would you like to know?
So you have a “yours and hers” situation, which implies at least one divorce, during which property and other matters were no doubt subject to legal proceedings ... and you still insist that government has no interest in your marriage state?
No, givernment has ZERO interst or rights in my marriage other than my child support.
"... other than...." Case closed.
Has having the almighty givernment involved in our marriages improved or detracted from the institution?
Too late. You've already provided one reason why government has a legal interest in your marriage. Division of common property was no doubt another part of your divorce proceedings.... Another legal complication.
“You’ve already provided one reason why government has a legal interest in your marriage.”
Which is?
