Rather than a boundless thirst for God, we have instead a "great thirst for contact with superior minds that will provide guidance for our poor, harassed, hectic, planet" Sounds like Mohammad in his cave.

I believe I have that book by Fr. Seraphim Rose. Now all the mystery sects: Blavatsky etc etc can be called Gnostic. Pagans generally are those who have more of a nature worship; Wicca, for example-—which is not Gnostic in its orientation. I see where both are kind of rolled up into one by many people. As far as UFO’s are concerned, I believe that there is life on other planets, but I am not going to get all hot and bothered about it until I see more proof.

No Orthodox Christian even slightly versed in the lives of the saints and the writings of the Holy Fathers can fail to understand what is happening here. The similarities between Streibers experiences (and those of other UFO "contactees") and the demonic warfare of the saints is compelling. The author himself even describes peculiar smells associated with his "visitors" among them, a "sulphur-like" odor which he compares to the head of a matchstick. His "visitors" have frightening, insect-like heads with enormous eyes that he associates with statues of the pagan goddess Ishtar. Ping for later

Thre are remarkable similarities between being “abducted by saucer men” and the mythic folklore of being “taken away by fairies” as is recorded in stories from our great grandfathers’ time. Wether this is a factural, physical abduction or some psychological event going on only in the minds of those involved, something has been going on for a long time.

Very well written topic. I would like to make reference to L.A Marzulli. He has a wonderful and intriguing view from a Christian perscective on this topic. Here is his blog: http://lamarzulli.wordpress.com/2008/09/25/ufos-the-great-deception/
Time is at hand and if you really don’t want to be deceived you need to become dogmatic about keeping and open mind and making a stand on one side or the other.

Interesting post - I had read both Strieber books in the 80's - I have since gained a different world-view on this topic.
The Bible is pretty clear on issues like this.
"For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 6:12)
