Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
WooHoo! It’s wonderful that Clare made it home before the snow hits and you are all home safe, snug, and groceried-up. It sounds like you are going to really get hit with some snow; we’ll watch from the distance :)
LSA and OB
Heh.
First, I took OB's advice, and ordered the magazine upgrade and stainless steel recoil spring guide for the Sig P229 in .22lr. Now I just need to wait until the guy's aftermarket mag follower, that locks the slide back on the last shot, is back in stock. The Sig looks a lot sharper now with that nice shiny piece of stainless steel matching the nice shiny barrel.
I replaced the M16-style takedown pins and the faux Sig-style push pins with the real Sig push pins on both the Sig 556 and P556. Why couldn't they just have used them in the first place? The only real trick was removing the stock and the endcap long enough to get the now-unneeded spring and plunger out of the lower receiver. Sig could have saved two parts, and some machining steps, if they just stuck with their GI push pins, like God intended.
I also finished up the Sig 556 with the rail covers, and the 552-type three-prong flash hider.
The old-style flash hider adds a bit of old-world charm to a weapon that now doesn't quite look like it did when it came out of the box.
The other big news of the week, and the easiest gunsmithing, was adding the Smith & Alexander mag well extension to the Kimber.
The stock magazine is now virtually useless, so I went with a Wilson Combat mag with a nice bump pad on it. The stock mainspring housing was plastic! (on a Kimber? Boo! Hiss!) so this stainless steel one adds an extra ounce or two. The weapon is plenty light (and handy), as is.
I don't know if you can tell from the last picture, or the next, but the mag well mainspring housing, while listed as "black, flat", is really a dark chocolate brown, about the same shade as the darkest brown on the grips. It doesn't really look it, until you compare it to "black" black, like the bump pad, or the grip safety.
It actually goes quite well with the tan/brown color scheme of the frame and grips. I don't know how S&A did it, but if Kimber could duplicate the color on this model, they'd have an even more handsome weapon than they do now.
I normally don't get all excited about color coordination, but this was just plain ol' dumb good luck on my part. It also made me realize that I'd love an exact clone of this in .22lr, but nobody makes .22 conversion units except for the full size government model.
Well, at least my Sig P229 is full-size, even in .22lr. And it now packs 15 rounds, not the measly 10 that some benighted states demand. But after some thinking, and some freepmail from OB, I've decided to order a .40S&W conversion unit. I've decided to reverse my statement of last week, and go with something other than 9mm (weapons for which seem to multiply in dark corners of the vault). It's a cheap way of getting another caliber, even if I only have 500 rounds of ammo and a few mags for it.
It will also be an even cheaper way of going to .357Sig. There I'd just need a new barrel. Neither of these calibers would be my "go to" caliber if TSHTF, but I can blast away at a lower incremental cost, thanks to Sig.
For this week coming up, I hope to make progress on my Sig 522 project. I've got all the parts I need for customizing except one.
Good morning ALL - heard some of the snow totals from back east. ya’ll got fonked on real good. we’ve got one supposedly coming in later this week, time will tell. we’re not in any competition with the east coasters.
Nicely done Win-Mag; very nicely done. Odd thing, the push pins, seems the labor rate time unit fellas would have figured that out. The 556 really looks good. Well done. The Kimber S & A magwell looks good and should help the speed on the tac reloads. If you plan to reload that new sig 229, I’ve got a contact that has .40 brass for sale cheeep. I got some 45 ACP and it all nice brass.
AlGore’s not coming to town, is he?
Nope, that I heard of; the weatherguy made a big deal about a big front coming the Pac NW through AZ and NM and then onto our area, to hear him say it, it’s like one chance in three.
It didn’t turn out too badly for us. We got about 5-7” total. John and Joseph went out around noon and cleared the driveway so I could get out. Clare and I drove over to Natick to get her bridesmaid skirt pinned, for them to hem it, and ordering her ‘ruby slippers’ for the wedding.
We’re all going to die!!
Hmmm. Nary a peep from the dwarf from the coast. Perhaps he’s ~ internetless ~ or otherwise occupied with snowmen and shovels.
Glad that the two feet turned out to be a reasonable yet very respectable 7 inches.
Ruby slippers...do we have Land of Ahs theme?
We're here. Moved a bookshelf this morning. Played in the snow with Luke. Then Jr. and I started through a Star Trek movie marathon. We're skipping most of the odd number ones. But we only made it through three today.
So, I remembered last night that I have about 200 tulip and daffodil bulbs in the garage that I ordered so that I could plant them ~this week~. What are my options for either planting them later or putting them in pots?
I’d go with putting them in pots.
I am trying to get ready for our trip to Pittsburgh and can’t find any of my long sleeve shirts... sigh...
Can I put them in pots and then put them outside? Or leave them in the garage until spring?
Hmmm.....I’d say put them in the garage. That way they won’t freeze during the winter.
I think I’d leave them in the garage; more protected from the real cold that way.
