A study of healthy adults found that those who took a daily aspirin for up to eight years did not significantly reduce their risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke. However, those who took the blood-thinning drug as part of a controlled clinical trial did increase their risk of stomach bleeding, compared to those taking a dummy pill.
The findings cast doubt over proposals for blanket prescription of aspirin for the over-fifties or as part of a polypill, a multi-drug tablet being developed to help prevent heart problems. GPs currently prescribe aspirin to people who have already suffered a heart attack or a stroke, or those who are considered at high risk because of high blood pressure or diabetes.

Anyone want to make a bet the the makers of the blood thinning drug (Brillinta) mentioned as a better option at the end of the article paid for both the study and the press release. Of course there was no mention of the name of the actual study, a place to view it, or the funding source of the study.
Hey, when my mother was having a heart attack (luckily at the doctor’s officer)she gave her an aspirin and saved her life.
A difference of 0.8 percentage points is statistically significant? Horsehockey! Having said that, the simple fact that aspirin thins the blood makes it a fairly logical conclusion that people would be more prone to bleeding. Why do we have to pay some bookworm millions of dollars to perform a study such as this?
