There's been a big fuss this week because Michelle Obama wore shorts. She's worn shorts before — to walk the dog, do stuff around the White House. But the photos of her wearing them in that iconic descending-from-Air-Force-One-onto-the-tarmac setting proved too much for the media. Obamas? Check. Summer news doldrums? Check. Controversy? Close enough. It was a story.

But the truth is there was a conflict. It is within each of us. While nobody would make Mrs. O wear couture in Arizona in August, the truth is, she just didn't look particularly good in shorts. Her arms are much admired. Her legs are just, you know, legs. Nobody immediately stepped forward, as J. Crew did with her cardigans, to announce "Hey, we made those! You can buy them too at unflatteringshorts.com."

Let me add, for once she looks “normal”. She could be going to work at any big city post office at 5 PM to sort mail. Is there a problem I’m missing here?

Post 1 is the first time I’ve seen the “shorts” picture. I thought it was Baracko who had worn the shorts. I guess it wasn’t as important to me as it was to the “media.” Of course, I don’t have “the tingle.”

It's that she managed, as always, to come off looking like Rosey Grier.
Her look is low rent. She's a tall woman and if she cared to she could present herself as classy and dignified......you know, LIKE A FIRST LADY IS SUPPOSED TO LOOK.
She projects like a Greyhound bus driver. Blecch.
Oh, I don’t know. With a staff of 24 you’d think she’d have someone there who’s in charge of getting off Air Force One without looking like a Wal Mart shopper.
How come her husband could wear long pants but she could not? She is truly classless and/or really, really does not care how she looks.
It is embarrassing.
She isn't just Mrs. Joe Average on vacation - she has a position to uphold.
When I'm travelling I try to dress a little better than that. She looks like I do when I'm dog training - NOT at a hunt test (I'm definitely more dressed up at a hunt test).
But she doesn't have the excuse that she's dealing with mud, wet dogs, and dead mallards.
No doubt room could be made for Michelle. Whatever, the pilots and other working crew members on Air Force One have a flying time requirement that has to be met whether Obama is on the plane or not.

not for the first lady of this country they sure as hell do not look appropriate. that fat ass looks like she just left some ghetto rib joint in east Los Angeles. pathetic that the appearance of America’s first lady has come to this and that any American that can remember back a ways to some of our previous first ladies, who exhibited and oozed real class, style (no matter the season) and love of country, have to be subjected to viewing this America hating slob.
Works for me, too, even in the desert.
