Word For The Day, Monday, 8/10/09
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
prevenient;adj
Coming before; preceding. Expectant; anticipatory.
Etymology: Latin praeveniēns, praevenient-, present participle of praevenīre, to precede : prae-, pre- + venīre, to come; see gwā- in Indo-European roots.] pre·ven'ient·ly adv
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Hiya, Whyisa!
I thought “TO” was one of us. A newbie perhaps.
*snicker*
Maybe October, but come the middle of November through January 1, the DJIA will be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay up. It’s a natural phenomenon.
Bring ‘em on. We are not to be terminated.
I have to spend the night in Japan before I embark for home. But I’ll probably be in Japan for work in September.
And yes I have a regular house back home. With a regular wife and daughter and two regular cats. ;-)
It’s an adjective, Brugman. Something must follow the word to justify the use of it.
Now, SD, that sounds vedddy, vedddy interesting. Must try it.
Oh, Hill was PO’d. Bill probably had to have another woman that night. He knows what’s coming: That damned ashtray.
Finding the right kind of ham and getting it sliced down think enough is the hard part. It can’t be a fancy ham, it needs to be a pressed-and-formed product with lots of delicious fat and sugar.
And then it needs sliced paper thin and piled up.
Dang, you travel a lot!!!
We only have four cats. No children. I think a child would be about four cats. < j > All different personalities, but they all have their naps between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Then around 8:00 to 9:00 they have their campfire in the dining room. We’re a little afeared they’re figuring a way to kill us, but they are loving kittens. The rest of the time they are under my feet all day long. They are only inside kittens, all adopted.
I would love that dish, but Cyber can’t eat ham. He can eat pork, just not ham. Too bad.
I bet I can create something a little different using sliced beef instead of ham. The Coke and Ketchup sounds so different.
Maybe if I put beer in it instead of Coke.
Do you say “soda” or “pop”? Just curious.
I’ll make it for my in-laws and me. Cyber can have his favorite food — pizza.
Before I met Cyber I had never ordered a pizza delivered. He has ten places on speed dial just for that reason. I hate pizza unless the sauce is made with plum tomatoes. There’s only one on speed dial.
Pop, of course. The dividing line goes through Pennsylvania. It’s what makes Philly east coast, while Pittsburgh is more midwestern.
I hate to tell you this, SD, but Cyber who is originally from Michigan calls it “pop.” I thought he meant Popcycles. I drink “soda,” as in Diet Coke in the morning and Ginger Ale in the evening.
I still think so many things are east or west of the Mississippi.
I think you misunderstood. I say “pop,” and I am from western PA. It is the both coasts that say “soda.”
I know. That's the problem with the pretentious prevenient little buggers.
They want center stage. They want to stand out. But what are they?
Adjectives.
No action, no object of an action. And they're usually from Latin. Or, even worse, from the French invasion. Anglo-Saxon them, I say.
Certainly fine for some venues. Reminds the enemy he's not dealing with a rabble. I have a predilection for punch to the gut words. We're losing them.
Willie, I figured this was a nicer crowd for you - those rednecks were playing mines bigger regarding their claim as a Texan -
LOL! Well, I can't claim to be entirely naive or innocent...
I was well aware of how big a redneck hornet's nest I was whacking when I told 'em Pittsburgh Chipped Ham BBQ was better than Texas BBQ!!!
It's a good thing I did that "anonymously" on the Internet... sheesh... if I said anything like that in the "real world" around here, it would bust out in a fistfight for sure! LOL!!!
how cool to get klondikes in the trick or treat bag!
The only time yinz could put 'em in the bag anat was when we had to Trick-or-Treat through the snow and slush. On warmer Halloweens, we had to eat 'em right away or else they'd melt and make a mess in the bag.
