Word For The Day, Monday, 8/10/09
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
prevenient;adj
Coming before; preceding. Expectant; anticipatory.
Etymology: Latin praeveniēns, praevenient-, present participle of praevenīre, to precede : prae-, pre- + venīre, to come; see gwā- in Indo-European roots.] pre·ven'ient·ly adv
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
My darling, for the last two weeks we’ve been having 95 degrees at 2:00 a.m. I know you’re not AZ, but we’re in monsoon season, but no rain can come down with that heat during the day!
I already stole it. Oops.
It’s so good to hear you again, Grimmy!
I don't like this word. It is preternatural. Sounds like "premie". There must be a good, sharp Anglo-Saxon word which could fill in for "prevenient" in your sentence. I, however, am at a loss. I can think of many strings of two words or more which do it but not one. Any suggestions?
My dad makes the sauce using only two ingredients. A regulation sized can of Coke and a restaurant-sized bottle of Heinz ketchup. Per pound of chipped ham.
No relish, yuck.
Isaly’s sold the Klondikes to Unilever ages ago. They eventually dropped the “Isaly’s” from the label.
Willie, I figured this was a nicer crowd for you - those rednecks were playing “mine’s bigger” regarding their claim as a Texan - Well I’m just as much a Texan as any of them and I love hearing about customs or practices of other conservatives.... liberals can all go to hell, but I enjoy hearing of family traditions of conservatives.
>>Love your photo, freedumb. I dont like calling you that, though.<<
That is very nice of you — you would be amazed at how many abuse it.
FD or FD2003 work :)
Before I left for the airport to work in Baton Rouge LA, I stopped at the corner prevenient store and got gas, drinks, and a cup of coffee.
Fellow image thief, you are welcome to my bounty :)
We are actually doing a service as an archivist for great images that may not endure. I have some old classics where the original site has disappeared.
:)
how about precursor? like that any better? will terming them dissenters be a precursor to placing them in re-ed camps?
our differences are what make it fun; learning about different things we do/how we say things/what we eat in diff parts of the country. What binds us together is our conservatism!
Wow, lavender makes her snarkier than usual.
Oh, I do, too. I'll try to show you two of my favorites. Two different nephews: One onboard the Bella Bru and another taking a nap in Afghanistan. Both Marines from different two different sisters.
I believe I can say "Semper Fi." I changed both of their diapers.
I’ve been called names because of the “Slip,” also. Slop comes to mind.
The original “Slip” in John MacDonald’s book was actually Slip-F18. I surely did not want that F in there.
So, FD it is.
Whoooooooh! Two oldies but goodies on WFTD. I miss you guys. I had to take time off, too. It’s like leaving your family. Tough stuff.
Are you going to Japan next?
Do you have a regular home here in the U.S.?
Reminds me of this:
phobos, kerdos, and doxa, said the Time Traveler. Fear, self-interest, and honor.
T-5 and Truthie, you both blow me away. Every time.
Oh, turn Cyber and I in, puhhhleeeez. We're ready.
Oh, I hate to admit this, but you did CD. I was the Assistant Shop Steward at AT&T, otherwise known as Ma Bell when I was 20. I was still a conservative, but didn’t know what I was doing.
