Well, I think LS is a great track, I just don’t think F1 in 2010 would like it. You are right about the objections being pretty pathetic—pretty sure GP at LS would draw 2-3 times what the Turkish GP managed.

Monaco probably ought to be dropped in modern F1, but because of the glitterati and the history will be on the schedule for as long as F1 exists. As a race it is usually fairly boring (IMO) unless someone screws up their pit stop.

F1 - just like NASCAR would love to be in the NY market. To do it they would have to start from scratch. If a Northern NJ town was really smart, they would take some brown field former industrial area with direct assess to arterial roadway and call Hermann Tilke.

Schumacher is working hard to hone his skills before Valencia

Michael Schumacher has continued his preparations for a return to Formula 1 with a second day of kart racing.

The German, who plans to deputise for the injured Felipe Massa in Valencia on 23 August, had suffered some neck discomfort while testing an F1 car.

But the seven-time world champion told his website that the karting in Northern Italy had caused no problems.

“cash for clunkers”

Does that mean they can trade in the Formula 1 BMW cars, for 2009?

BMW Sauber have rejected a takeover offer from founder Peter Sauber.

Sauber, who holds a 20% stake in the German team, revealed he offered to take it over last week after they announced plans to exit from Formula 1.

He revealed that talks had collapsed, saying the automaker's demands were "far too high".

In order to compete next season, teams had to sign the new Concorde Agreement that governs F1 racing, outlining how the sport is run and how its revenues are distributed, by Wednesday.

The failure of Sauber's bid means he has been unable to meet the deadline. "I have been unable to sign the Concorde Agreement, which guarantees payments worth millions and would have secured the future of the team," Sauber told Autosport. "I am incredibly disappointed and disconsolate. For me this is the bitterest day in my 40-year career in motor sport. It is also a devastating setback for the team.

Yikes.

I raced karts in my misspent youth. I’ve seen video of Schumacher driving a kart - he would have slaughtered me. It was like he had made some Faustian deal for that kind of talent.

there used to be kart races here at the Glen and it could get exciting watching them go through the funnel in front of the scoring tower sometimes

Team US F1 determined to use home talent

The US-based Formula One team due to join the grid next season say they are determined to stick to their guns and use American drivers, despite being approached by experienced names from other countries with substantial financial backing.

"We've been offered well over three-quarters of our racing budget by two drivers already, neither of whom have raced in Formula One but both have won races in GP2," Team US F1 co-founder Peter Windsor told Sports Illustrated magazine.

"Both of them have massive sponsorship they can bring us from their home country. (Team co-founder) Ken (Anderson) and I have got to be very strong, look one another in the eye and say, 'No, we're not going to accept that money, we're not going to hire those guys because we're going to remain true to our convictions’.”

Lauda on Schumacher: the hunger for competition never dies

The 2009 Formula One season has already had its fair share of major stories, but all are set to be surpassed by Michael Schumacher’s planned comeback in the forthcoming European Grand Prix, replacing Felipe Massa. One man who knows all about comebacks is Niki Lauda, who walked away from the sport in 1979, only to return two seasons later and ultimately win a third world title. We got his take on Schumacher’s prospects…

It won’t be Juan, he’s Columbian. He’s looking for an American. I have no idea where he will find him (or her). The defunct A1GP had some young American drivers in it, but I have no idea how good they really were. Andretti & Rahal (the youngin’s) have good pedigree, but that doesn’t translate into good F1 drivers. I’d like to see Rahal’s kid, he’s got a good temperment. I hope Windsor pulls this off and that F1 doesn’t implode before it happens.

FYI, the ALMS race is on your NBC affliate today. Check your local listings (2:30PM in the WashDC region). That is the sportscar hijack post or ping or whatever of the day. :-)

But, didn't Bobby Rahal leave a bad taste over in F1 a few years ago with his Jaguar effort? I agree though, the young guns, especially, Rahal, will be the ticket. I have in the back of my thoughts a top-gun NASCAR guy moving over to F1 for a round or two. I see trouble brewing on the horizon of NASCAR sponsorship, so now may be a good time to take the leap. Perhaps, Jeff Gordon? I suspect his wife will encourage the move, and I think JG would be a helluva F1 driver. However, I hope the Patrick circus, PC correct, girl show doesn't try to lip-stick her way into a ride. I promise, the F1 boys will not be kind....

it won’t be Patrick either...good name mediocre racer....I would like to say I’m partial to Rahal but he’s done relatively little in one year of CC and two in the IRL...

just for sh!ts and giggles I’d put AJ Almindinger in the car for a test....

Oh yeah, Almindinger. I forgot about him. There is a kid named Sumerton (I think thats his name). He raced in the defunct A1GP for a bit. He was pretty good. I don’t have any idea where he is now.
