This will be a general purpose thread for F1 news and pings that really don't require a thread of their own.

Michael Schumacher in critical condition
Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition in a French hospital as a result of the head injury that he suffered in a skiing accident on Sunday.
A statement issued by Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble on Sunday evening confirmed that Schumacher’s injuries were very serious and that he had undergone emergency surgery.
It described Schumacher’s condition as critical and said he was in a coma.

just saw that report.. sad.
head injuries are the worst.
ESPN reporting he underwent brain surgery:
Saw that earlier today. Prays for Michael and his family.
I read conflicting prognoses earlier. One described the injury as not life threatening, but another said there is brain damage. I realize these aren’t mutually exclusive, but I sure hope there is no permanent damage.
Saw this last night in the news. Wow he must have hit his head hard, he was wearing a helmet and still has a head injury? Prayers
my God....
UPDATE: Michael Schumacher “fighting for his life” say doctors
The medical team caring for Michael Schumacher in France says he is still “fighting for his life” following the skiing accident he suffered on Sunday morning. Contrary to some rumors he has not undergone a second operation, but he remains in a medically induced coma.
The seven-time world champion suffered a severe head injury after hitting his head on a rock, and is currently undergoing treatment at Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Grenoble.
During a press conference on Monday morning, the doctors looking after Schumacher made it clear just how serious the German’s injuries were, and said it was too early to offer a prognosis.
Professor Jean-Francois Payen said: “I would say that this accident was particularly serious and was dealt with immediately at our hospital. He was immediately operated on after a brain scan and afterward his condition is critical.

This is not good. I thought the initial prognosis was that the injuries were not not life threatening. That seems to have changed.
Wow..still can’t believe this. Prayers for him.
No helmet can stop the brain from impacting the inside of the skull during near-instantaneous deceleration of the head.
Sad news and like others, hope all the best for Michael.
Thanks for the ping.
Hope he pulls through without lasting impairment. The medical team making such a statement certainly is more serious than the usual yellow press hyperbole.
Retiring from a long career in a hazardous sport only to be cut down by a pasttime accident? That would be sad.
Is there really that much news concerning one button on a keyboard?
True, but the helmet spreads the impact force over a larger area and also has a dampening effect. That said - and I'm going out on a long, thin limb here - F1 drivers have tremendous neck musculature, which would lessen neck deflection and hence channel more force into the head itself. Hoisted by his own petard, as it were?
