True, but the helmet spreads the impact force over a larger area and also has a dampening effect. That said - and I'm going out on a long, thin limb here - F1 drivers have tremendous neck musculature, which would lessen neck deflection and hence channel more force into the head itself. Hoisted by his own petard, as it were?

Plus, as good a skier as he is, he was probably moving really fast.
