NEW YORK – A pirated e-book of "1984" led to an Orwellian moment for Kindle customers.

Users of Amazon.com's e-reader device were surprised and unsettled over the past day to receive notice that George Orwell works they had purchased, including "1984" and "Animal Farm," had been removed from their Kindle and their money refunded.

Glad to see people reading about what is happening -

Animal Farm and 1984 are very relevant to what Obama and the media are doing to us NOW.

Who needs Amazon?

And while I’m at, I should give equal time to a communist author:

(Can come in handy when you need to look up a quote without turning pages or paying royalties.)

The article said — The Orwell ordeal highlighted two concerns in the virtual world — that a book already paid for and acquired can be revoked by the long arm of an e-tailer (the Kindle operates on a wireless connection that Amazon ultimately controls); and the difficulty of stopping bootlegged texts.

That’s one very good reason to *never have* a Kindle e-book reader. That’s like someone walking into your home and taking stuff out of it and saying that you should have never been able to buy it at the store, so we’re now taking it away from you.

And it’s certainly ironic that “changing history” and “rewriting history” was done in our present day through people’s Kindle e-book reader with George Orwell’s story of “1984”...

Animal Farm is good - it’s really about the Russian Revolution but you can EASILY substitute Obama and thug gang with the leaders.

1984 is VERY disturbing. Hate is a dominant theme and of course the “thought police”. We already have that stuff in place. I do wonder ... in the end ... was he totally broken after Room 101? In the last scene, on the movie, he writes 2 + 2 = ... and doesn’t answer it. We have simiiar stuff going on here ... .

1984 is brutal and as I mentioned - VERY DISTURBING.

I suggest for future tea parties people use OBAMA and THUGS on a poster using Animal Farm as the theme. I didn’t have time for it when I attended our local tea party. I will be better preprared next time. I will have OBAMA face morphed onto a black pig as well as the media, Pelosi and others as Animal Farm animals. I will call it something like the updated, 1984 characters by Orwell. I am so PISSED at what is going on.

One more thing ... I'll be “celebrating diversity” Animal Farm style.

BTW my daughter is just finishing that up. She'll be entering 5th grade in the fall. I want her to KNOW what is going on and RELATE to it. This past fall the kids were so politicized ... so I will make it a point and finish the job. I hadn't planned on doing this at age 10 but heck, I will not let leftists brainwash her into thinking Obama and anyone on his rolodex as being anything but EVIL - birds of a feather flock together.

I LOVE my Kindle. I still love going to bookstores, the smell of books, etc. But, the Kindle does have it's place. Traveling, for one. To each his own, I guess. You do have a compelling argument, that's for sure.

This is why I’ve avoided Kindle so far. Its the worry about having my books withdrawn after the fact, and not being able to independently back up my books.

Mind you, I’m not talking about rejecting e-books, but rather a *Kindle* e-book reader. I have an e-book reader and a whole lot of e-books. They are in PDF format and I like them that way, too.

The one thing I know *for sure* is that they won’t disappear if someone else “figures out” (for some reason, like in the “thinking of 1984”) that I shouldn’t have them... LOL...

I can protect those e-books and even hide them if I have to and even encrypt them so that no one else can get to them (if I want to). I can back them up and spread them around, if I want to...

Exactly! And I have e-books, so I’m not personally talking about not liking e-books versus the printed versions. I love e-books and use them — just *not* Kindle.... :-)

I can even read books on my iPhone, if I want to..., but usually I like my laptop for that. But, I do have some PDF files for reference to some material on my iPhone.

"I LOVE my Kindle."

I got into E-Books back when I got my Palm I loved being able to log on to the INTERNET and downloading a book in seconds 24/7 (no trips to the bookstore which is more than a 2 hour round trip for the part of the country I live in).

But I soured on the prospect as more and more publishers raised the price of their E-books to the same level as their "dead tree media" Editions of the very same book.

I have a problem with such idiocy for a number of reasons not the least of which the DRM issue that stops me from reselling my E-book or lending it to a friend. (I got no problem with such IF I was paying substantially less for a E-book that grants me much less in the way of Ownership Rights) The other obvious bit is an E-book costs multitudes less to produce over a copy in "dead tree media" format.

I love the idea of Kindle BUT if their price for books are the same as Hard Copies then I won't invest in such. I'll just use the library until prices come in line with their dramatically reduced costs that come with producing E-books!

July 16, 2009: DoubleSpeak From The VP

“Now, people when I say that look at me and say, ‘What are you talking about, Joe? You’re telling me we have to go spend money to keep from going bankrupt?’” Biden said. “The answer is yes, that's what I’m telling you.”

"When we were notified of this by the rights holder, we removed the illegal copies from our systems and from customers' devices, and refunded customers.

George Orwell died in 1950. That is 59 years ago.

Why are his books still under copy right.

Copy right was originally intended to ensure that men of Ideas would be guaranteed compensation for their works. I can understand that. Originally copy rights were extended for twenty years (typically an author would die before the copy right ran out). Now copy rights are immortal. I could even understand having copy right protection extending to the life of the author or perhaps even the life of the designated heir. But fifty years for a book is just nonsense.

Copy right protection is very likely preventing many books from being read. Books that today could be freely down loaded from a central data server and read can not be because copy right protections prevent it.

As a rabid capitalist I am all for profit but the people profiting on Orwell’s work today I will wager have no relationship at all with Orwell and likely as not even with the original publisher.

At some point knowledge and literature should enter the public domain and it should not take fifty years and it should not be indefinite.

For you information...

Copyright Term Extension Act
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright_Term_Extension_Act

The Copyright Term Extension Act (CTEA) of 1998 extended copyright terms in the United States by 20 years. Since the Copyright Act of 1976, copyright would last for the life of the author plus 50 years, or 75 years for a work of corporate authorship. The Act extended these terms to life of the author plus 70 years and for works of corporate authorship to 120 years after creation or 95 years after publication, whichever endpoint is earlier.[1] Copyright protection for works published prior to January 1, 1978 was increased by 20 years to a total of 95 years from their publication date.

Brussels - A proposal to extend copyright term lengths from 50 to 95 years has passed in the European Commission, and will now move to a vote before the European Parliament.
