With the possible exception of Nolan Ryan, no one through harder than Bob Gibson, my boyhood idol - and I grew up in Cali and Ohio. What a baseball player and completely underrated or should I say under appreciated by modern baseball media.
Was a great competitor. Tough as nails. Frightening to batters.
Wasn’t his lifetime ERA 1. something?
Gibson took out my beloved Red Sox at the ‘67 WS. Kept us waiting even longer for a championship.
He also liked to work very quickly which made him my brother’s favorite pitcher. My brother never had patience for long drawn-out baseball games.
As a kid, we would go to Wrigley to watch Gibson v. Jenkins,
you talk about fast games. Those 2 guys didn’t waste time
walking around the mound, or any of the BS they do now.
Good memories of Gibson on 8-8-88. He sat 1 row behind us
for the Cubs first night game in Wrigley. The best 3 innings
I can almost remember.
