Missing feline Linus 'thinks he's a dog,' owners say. Linus, a cat that "thinks he's a dog," is missing. And a Batavia woman -- who the cat's owners say accused their feline of killing chipmunks -- is charged after allegedly luring Linus with tuna.
Brenda Scharlau, 55, of the 100 block of North Harrison Street is charged with misdemeanor theft in connection with the missing 9-year-old American shorthair, which is owned by Scharlau's next-door neighbors, Batavia Deputy Chief Gregory Thrun said Tuesday. Linus' owner, Jody Lay, alleges her neighbor, angry that Linus was harassing chipmunks in her yard, caught the cat and drove west 10 to 15 miles to Lily Lake or Virgil in western Kane County before letting it out.

For the record.....I don’t live anywhere near Batavia.
Because the woman told other neighbors she had lured the cat with tuna and then driven it far out of town and dumped it.
In many jurisdictions, cats are allowed to roam free as long as they are spayed/neutered and rabies vaccinated. I would never buy a home in a jurisdiction which prohibited cats roaming free. And it’s illegal everywhere to dump cats, regardless of whether they were found roaming free in a place where it’s not allowed by law. If there’s a problem cat or dog coming onto your property, you call police or animal control.
A baseball bat gives weight to your argument.
Try releasing a bullsnake in your rock garden - they are rodent-eating machines.
Well Batavia should know a thing or two about “baseball bats”.
Heck I’ve even been to the home of the muckdogs.
And Fermilab.
In the past I'd relocate them but I thought I'd try something new with this one. I hosed him down pretty darn good then released him. I'll be surprised if he shows up on my deck again..... Hopefully he'll at least do his part with the rabbit problem around here.
I do have a lot of yard and my cat does roam and one of the reasons we have a cat is to kill chipmunks. It works. Our neighbors complain that their decks are undermined and chewed up. Chipmunks carry diseases including the plague and my cat has all his shots and is chipped. He weighs enough that the wild animals don’t bother him and he insists, loudly, on being put in the basement with his food at 9 p.m. He has his job to do but does it early in the morning. Doesn’t bring the critters home but we have noticed that during the spring and early summer he doesn’t eat as much cat food.
I may have to resort to lead based repellent for the chipmunks. They have chewed holes all in the siding on my house. My cats won't pay them any attention.
How about the chipmunks? I used to have a squirrel problem until my next door neighbor got a trap and started relocating them to a not so local park. He said he had transported 100 squirrels at last count.
That’s illegal in most places, mostly due to wildlife laws aimed at avoiding unnatural movement of populations and diseases. I think most places allow it if the movement is very local, like within the county at a distance that the animal could have travelled on its own.
Personally I’m very fond of my squirrels and my cats love watching them too. We have several trained to take nuts out of our hands, and a few years back, one of the dear little critters had gotten so confident about the idea that creatures emerging from the back door of my house give nuts, that he tried — repeatedly — to get my elderly cat to give him one. Poor kitty was very confused, and finally took a half-hearted swat at the equally confused squirrel, and the disillusioned squirrel scampered off wondering what had become of the world he thought he understood. I lured him back and gave him a nut a minute or so later. I *think* he finally figured out that only *big* creatures emerging from the back of my house give nuts. These concepts are challenging when you’ve got a brain the size of a pea :-)

If anyone stole one of my cats and threw it away somewhere, I’d sue them — in fact I’d bankrupt myself suing them if necessary, and I didn’t even sue the lady who ran into me and my bicycle.
I never let my cats out.
You’ve got better restraint than me, I did sue the lady that hit me on my bike, and if someone took one of my cats, like I said, you have better restraint than me.
I never let my cats out, which isn’t to say they never get out.
