Mac threads resemble DU.
Blue Highway ^ | 7/01/09 | Blue Highway

It seems like every time I venture into an Apple thread here on FR, it's similar to venturing over into Democratic Underground territory.

Personal attacks abound especially if you start criticizing Apple products or other Apple users for being naive into thinking Apple is everything their clever marketing department represents it to be.

It seems like the Mac ping list alerts the faithful flock to defend Apple to the death and that is when the claws come out and it starts to get ugly.

itsahoot called me a liar in a roundabout way by stating:

"And you blue, have a vivid imagination. PC Labs, computer that are actually used rarely have more than a three year life span, even then then, only with considerable maintenance. "

My sister still uses her laptop she bought in the summer of 2002. Sure the battery has maybe a 10 minute runtime but that's actually better than my complately drained Compaq battery. I don't think she ever used her laptop running on batteries at all.

that is because Rush and freepers notwithstanding, Mac users are largely lefties

I don't know if that is accurate. About four years ago, the New York Times did a survey of their readers about which platform they used and their political leanings. Turned out that about 41% of the respondents who used Macs considered themselves Conservative or Republican... another 19% claimed to be moderate or "independent." I would expect that being readers of the NYT that there would have been some self selection leaning toward lefties as conservatives and Republicans would switch to less egregiously biased newspapers such as the NY Post, so that high a percentage was a surpirse to me.

forgot to mention itsahoots post was #35.

#43 by Truthhound:

"ADS = Apple Derangement Syndrome

Stick with Gatesys."

severe/insulting saying I have ADS. So for you to claim there were no ad hominem attacks on me in that battery thread and I just posted 4 of them and we're only up to #42 out of over 100 comments in that thread. As of post #42 I have yet to lash out at anyone yet. I will admit I did get heated but it happened a lot less from me attacking them as they attacked me. So much for your PC users attack 9 times versus Apple users attack once theory.

Insulting/severe I would consider. Definitely a personal attack without even insultinghim first. THAT is the type of behavior one usually finds on those DU threads, case in point.

That is not an attack on you. It does not disparage YOU... it disparages your comments. Fair game.

He did not insult you personally. He did not call you names. He stated, somewhat colloquially that what you said was boring. That may or may not be a fair judgement call but It is not an insult.

you gotta be kidding me...Lefties trumpet macs like the perfect accessory

like a Volvo or mongrel adopted pup instead of a purebred

or guys in girl jeans

or a Prius

I'm in Nashville and sometimes my aunt makes me take her Mac into the shoppe, it's like a time warp...freakville and other towns I've been to same thing

I bet you go on DU or KOS and it's Mac city

not that Macs are bad ....I like Jobs...wish him well it's just that lefties think Macs represent them and that Gates and PCs are the “man”..even though Gates is pro abort and hardly a righty...Google has plenty of topics on this

what is bizarre is that the Mac using Freepers will rarely ever acknowledge that Mac users by and large are liberals.

That is because it is pretty much a myth created by the fact that Macs are very prevalent in media which IS heavily liberal and high exposure liberals at that. I know quite a few Mac users. I have many clients who are Mac users. My EXPERIENCE, not hearsay, is that about 30% are Liberal, 30% are Conservative, and 40% somewhere in the middle. As in most things, the users of Macs reflect the population.

yep but you and I know better...just go to any Mac store. . . hell it’s way worse than going to Whole Foods or Trader Joes . . . feels like you walked into an ACORN office

And you can tell the political affiliation of customers in a store by sight?

That falls well into the realm of "duh".

Yeesh, man, if you hate Apple so much, why don't you just stay off Apple threads? Underwater basket weaving is considerably more productive...

severe/insulting.

This wasn't a deserved attack as you put it, I was contemplating whether or not Apple would implement a strategy in which AC power would no longer work once the internal battery died. This IS possible to incorporate something like this, but just my suggesting this may be a possibility and I get a DUHHHHHHHH and Hey Blue, stick to underwater basketweaving. severe/insulting.

Yes indeed. At a store like Whole Foods my accuracy is within 95%.

I look at liberals as more than a party affiliation, it is a mindset, a flawed outlook on life.

Implying I drive a pos or don't maintain my car. THIS is severe/insulting.

I don't see any implication that you drive a POS car. I do see a concern about your attitude toward routine maintenance of technological devices. Considering your claim that you have not bothered to replace a very important functional part of your notebook computer—without a working battery, your notebook is hardly portable or usable as a notebook is intended to be used—because it cost too much, the analogy might be apt.

I'd call this a very mild form of ad hominem with a humorous intent.

So this makes 3 severe/insulting comments directed towards me and this is only at comment #31 and is well before I got pissed at the dogpile/mob mentality.

Take this for what you will... but if you think THESE are "severe insults" then you have a very thin skin.

I am wondering if Swordmaker can own up to the FACT that Whole Foods is a liberal world unto itself. It’s like stepping into another dimension. I don’t see much difference between the patrons of either Whole Foods and Apple Store. This is FACT.

It is? Or is it YOUR opinion? I think it's the latter.

By the way, Whole Foods is irrelevant. I have never been in one. I'm more of a meat and potatoes man, myself, much to the chagrin of Mrs. Swordmaker.

When I use the word severe/insult I am using that to clarify how I would classify the remarks according to your own classification. Personally, I wouldn't consider them severe to the point I was offended. Sure when I am accused of lying then it ticks me off a bit.

In any event I didn't want to go line by line through that thread to state my case, as I have more important things to do with my time, like sleep.

I did prove my point though that there were several severe/insulting comments (according to your classsification) direcdted towards me in the battery thread, in which you said there were none that were unjustified.

itsahoot called me a liar in a roundabout way by stating:

I too think you have a vivid imagination as demonstrated by your fictional scenarios about the batteries failing, Apple's failures to service their customers, the made up pricing of said batteries when the actual prices are easily discovered with a little research, fears of Apple Genius Bar employees being so interested in the contents of your hard drive that they will spend valuable time combing through it.

Too many anti-Mac/anti-Apple trolls will say anything to make a point. It has been my experience that most laptops of the 2002 vintage are usually dead... but a few are plugging away several sigmas away from the statistical mean failure time. Laptops that are actually carried and opened and closed frequently are among the most likely to fail... with the hinges and the ribbon cable to the screen being the most likely culprits.

That is still very mild compared to some of the invective Apple users have been on the receiving end of.

#43 by Truthhound:

"ADS = Apple Derangement Syndrome

I am not certain how TruthHound meant that. That is an epithet that has been used by PC fanatics AGAINST Mac users... saying that because we use Apples we are somehow deranged. That along with the Steve Jobs' Reality Distortion Field (RDF) are frequently cited in the same paragraph.

So much for your PC users attack 9 times versus Apple users attack once theory.

it's not a theory, Blue, it is a set of data extracted from the real world. It is also reproducible. But I must apologize. My memory was defective. I reviewed my report on that and the actual figure is that PC users are 7.8 times more likely to insult Mac users than vice verse.

The plural of anecdote is not data, Wardaddy.

There is no political litmus test for which computer you buy.

I challenge you to post evidence of those lefties trumpeting Macs as the perfect accessory.

Most Liberals eat carrots. You eat carrots. Ergo, you are a carrot, er, Liberal. Faulty logic.

Re: The NYT survey. When it was published I posted the results on FR. I've been trying to find the link, but Google does not find it and unfortunately I don't have the time to go back through the FR archives looking for it. The results were what I posted. 41% conservative or Republican. Other surveys have found Mac ownership distribution by political leanings pretty much reflect the distribution of the political leanings of the population at large.

No, Blue, by the time that ctdonath2 posted this, you had earned it... in Spades.

It is a legitimate question... and a legitimate observation. Again, where is the personal attack? You don't seem to be getting anywhere in convincing us Mac users that we should abandon our delusions. Perhaps underwater basketweaving is more productive?

You were "contemplating whether or not Apple would implement a strategy in which AC power would no longer work once the internal battery died" which is something that in 20 years of Apple Notebook computers has never happened, lacks ANY foundation for such speculation, is completely contrary to the expectations of a company who tops the Customer Satisfaction surveys, every year, and who is completely dependent on the good will of its customers and their continued willingness to trust them by investing large amounts of money in their products. Such contemplation belongs solidly in the realm of fantasy and intentional libel that the idea just boggles my mind.

To post something so outlandish without evidence or foundation, based on a begging-the-question assumption that the new batteries ARE GOING TO FAIL before their rated life, is so off the wall that it DESERVES the question of why you hate Apple so much, and why you repeatedly invade Apple Mac threads with your misinformation and FUD .. and why would you repeatedly expose yourself to what you claim is abuse from us evil, mean DU like Apple users. You earned every bit of that very mild rebuke.

1. Nobody in their right mind would use a bank of Mac Pro's as a server farm...they would use servers which are specifically designed for that purpose. Using Mac Pro's would be a waste of money and geography.

2. Most people do use "Sudetenland i7's" or Opterons or less expensive Xeons in "mission critical work," hence the 10% Apple market share. There are far far more Windows and Unix based servers and workstations being used in "mission critical work" than there are all Apple computers of whatever make. Google builds their own design for their "mission critical work" and I assure you they don't build Macs.

3. The pricetag for building a Mac Pro clone using the same spec equipment and the same processor buying from a retail parts outlet is $2000. That would place the price for constructing a unit wholesale at about $1000...maybe $1200 at the outside. Ummm...let's see now $2500/ $1200 = 2+ gee I guess that makes 100%. Add a little overhead and labor costs and you still are at 80% at the minimum.
