Mac threads resemble DU.
Blue Highway ^ | 7/01/09 | Blue Highway

It seems like every time I venture into an Apple thread here on FR, it's similar to venturing over into Democratic Underground territory.

Personal attacks abound especially if you start criticizing Apple products or other Apple users for being naive into thinking Apple is everything their clever marketing department represents it to be.

It seems like the Mac ping list alerts the faithful flock to defend Apple to the death and that is when the claws come out and it starts to get ugly.

That page refers to current Macbook models I am under the assumption these new batteries are in soon to be released Macbooks. In any event I read this in the warranty disclaimer and have a HUGE problem with it. Replacement of a battery which has been consumed via normal use is not covered under warranty.

So there is no way to run that battery into the ground via trying to reach the 1000 charge limit within the first year and have them replace it for FREE. They are basically stating normal usage resulting in a drained battery doesn't constitute a warranty replacement.

Unless I am reading that wrong I would be pissed to no end if I owned a macbook and tried running it on batteries until it drained then charging and doing that 1000 times and then trying to get a replacement within a year and then they try to deny me my replacement.

I just visited the Apple web page and looked at the mighty Mac. $2499 will buy you a quad 2.66GHz processor, 4 gigs of ram, a "superdrive," a 640 GB hard drive, and an NVidea 120s GT video card plus the OSX and ILife.

I just built a PC with a quad 2.66 GHz processor, 8 gigs of ram, a DVDR drive, 2 1 TB hard drives and an ATI 4850 HD video card plus sundry necessary hardware for.....$1000 (all parts bought retail from Newegg).

Hmmm...decisions, decisions...$2500 for a bottom line Mac Pro or $1000 for a PC with more storage, better video card, faster processor, and more ram?

Bring the Mac up to my system's modest capabilities and the price skyrockets to.....$3149. But Macs are not overpriced...nah.

Correction: Not faster processor...I overclocked mine to a modest 2.9GHz, but I decided to compare the Mac to mine at native speed.

The LI-Po batter is in currently available Macs. They were introduced in June.

Is your computer’s components equal in quality to Mac’s? Those numbers do not always tell the whole story. And even so it is somewhat unfair to compare a build it yourself to a Mac. Price out equally outfitted Dells or HPs to the Mac.

Swordmaker will post some lengthy reply to you stating the Mac Pro will be cheaper in the long run considering (you’re gonna love this) the higher resale value of macs. But yeah Apple users can’t deny it is cheaper to build a PC than a Mac. You got 2 1TB drives to the Macs puny 640gb drive. Bwahahaha. Plus the Mac Pro is $1500 more than your PC. At least YOU get it. I wonder why the Apple sheep are so blind as to not see this?

Very true; why is that?

All this is is the current edition of the Ford vs. Chevy vs Mopar (Linux) debates I recall from my younger days. Lots of guys got irrational over their chosen make. BTW I think the final results are in and Ford won since it looks like it will be the only one left standing in the near future.

You miss the point entirely. With a PC I CAN build my own. I can customize it to be exactly as I want and as I can afford. Apple doesn't offer that capability unless you want to chance that you can build a "Hackintosh" and hope that you can kludge the OS into it and get it to work flawlessly.

As to the parts yes, as far as I am able, I buy high quality parts...just not overpriced parts...eg. 1TB SATA-II Western Digital (superior to the Hitachi's-IMHO-that Mac's use)hard drive - $100; Apple wants $300/drive for the same size.

Sorry to hear that.....It takes only one MAC for me. :)

My PC grandson and I have friendly digs at each other about this very thing.

Ummm..., I always thought there was a pro and a con side... :-)

HOWEVER, I do think in the “religious section” they have a “caucus” where you can only post if you agree with the premise of the thread.

You might consider starting an “anti-Mac caucus” where the only people who can post are rabid anti-Mac people... LOL...

You said to Blue Highway — Wait.....is this satire? You started the most recent mac thread.

Okay, I see what the problem is.

He forgot to put this thread in the “religious section” and label it the “anti-Mac religious caucus” — for the rabid anti-Mac people.

And you miss Apple’s business model entirely. They sell hardware with very good software on it. They make money from hardware. A lot of people do buy it because of the software, but it would take a lot of $129 OS X copies to equal one MacBook. Why would they trade a cash cow for almost no money. That doesn’t make any sense.

And how much is building a computer worth anyway? I have no desire to. I don’t think it is a particularly difficult but I still have no desire to do it and even if I did I highly doubt I would be as good at it as Apple’s engineers. That has to be worth a few hundred anyway.

I’m sure you can build a computer cheaper than the equivalent Dell or HP as well. Do you dislike them as well?

It’s my observation that it is Mac users who almost always start trashing Microsoft first. If you got a Mac good for you. Just don’t start trashing PCs because you don’t like them. There are plenty of FReepers who are perfectly happy with their PCs.

Well, I don’t think he’ll buy any... but it’s just that he doesn’t like seeing people around him buying them either, doncha know... :-)
