Mac threads resemble DU.

It seems like every time I venture into an Apple thread here on FR, it's similar to venturing over into Democratic Underground territory.

Personal attacks abound especially if you start criticizing Apple products or other Apple users for being naive into thinking Apple is everything their clever marketing department represents it to be.

It seems like the Mac ping list alerts the faithful flock to defend Apple to the death and that is when the claws come out and it starts to get ugly.

No apology necessary, every time they attack it reinforces the original premise...thus making the point even more obvious. I've also noticed they lack any sense of humor when it comes to comments about Macs.

I always loved this one:
Q: How many Newtons does it take to change a lightbulb?

A: Foux! There to eat lemons, axe gravy soup.
Remember the great Newton? The handwriting recognition device that revolutionized the handheld computer world...anybody? Anybody?

They are supposed to last up to 7 hours on a charge and have a useful life of 5 years before needing to be replaced. Replacement apparently costs as much as a replacement for Blue Highway’s Compaq ($130). The only difference being you have to drop the Apple off at the Apple store for a few hours or send it to Apple for a few days. Some will consider that a worthwhile trade-off for the increased size and longevity. I would imagine most people are looking for a new laptop at 5 years anyway.

I can’t be tied to one kind of computer...my work requires me to use PC, Mac and UNIX. In fact, I am presently running all three on this Mac I have in my lap. The cramming of Vista is what forced me to go Mac, because my telecommute software is not, and will never be, supported on Vista.

I have no idea if the batteries will last 5 years or 1000 charging cycles. I posted that thread as it is “new” technology plain and simple. I stated my opinion of my dislike of any company that chooses the route on non user serviceable parts. THIS is the route Apple is taking. I know we live in a disposable society these days, but I tend to steer towards more DIY type mentality companies rather than proprietary companies that have a program of planned obsolescence.

If you don’t like Apple products, start a thread praising Microsoft, if you can do that with a straight face.

Post of the day, and I'm using a pc. :)

I remember it, and I also own a Palm. Help! I’m a geek! My Kindle came in the mail a couple weeks back.

Blue,

I surmise that you are bored and looking for a little excitement with this post.

That’s fine. There are worse ways to get some kicks.

I still fail to see the big problem when you can get a replacement battery as cheaply for the Apple as your Compaq. So what if the user can’t replace it, either way you are out the same amount of money. If the battery is as useful as they claim do you really not think it is worth the tradeoff of a few hours at the mall? That is really all anyone will be out.

I use a PC at work, and a Mac at home. At work, someone else worries about everything, updates, security, etc., new ones every couple of years, and I don’t have to bother. I can do what I do on either one.

I've usually broken mine in three years. That's about how long my last three laptops have lasted. I can be a bit hard on them at times, I guess. Just under the three-year time limit on my extended warranty.

That is a BIG assumption on your part that this new Li-Poly battery will cost the same to replace as the Li-Ion battery they now sell for $129/$179. You also fail to factor in the cost of service of replacing this non-removable battery after the warranty period expires. If they replace it as a courtesy with the user just paying the price of the battery itself then it is not so bad, but I highly doubt that will be the case. Time will tell.

Yeah, it is actually. Which is why I avoid tech threads in general and Mac threads in particular even though I work in the “industry”.

We built test equipment around them, before they discontinued them.

You haven’t lived unless you’ve attended one of the early PDA trade fests, and seen Apple geeks walking around with Newtons hanging from their belts.

You saw the same support page I did, if you clicked on the link at least. The title of that page is "Replacing the Battery in your MacBook Pro (2009 models with built-in battery)". In other words, the non-replaceable Li-Poly battery.

It also says "The price of the replacement battery includes installation of your new battery and environmentally responsible disposal of your depleted battery." The prices are $129 (for most computers despite your baseless assertion otherwise) or $179 for those with 17in models. Here is the link again in case you didn't look at it before.

I didn't assume anything.
