Billy Gibbons Reveals the Secret of ZZ Top's 40 Years Together
Spinner ^ | 6/11/09 | Steve Baltin

Being on the road this summer with ZZ Top puts Aerosmith in a unique position for the Boston rockers. As guitarist Joe Perry rightly told us of the little ol' band from Texas, "They've been together longer than us." Not many acts can claim to have outlived Aerosmith, and even fewer can last so long with the original lineup. Therefore, it's that much more amazing that 2009 marks the 40th anniversary for bandmates Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard, and Dusty Hill.

Let that digest for a second -- 40 freaking years! Obama is the eighth president ZZ Top has recorded under, the Beatles hadn't broken up yet when they formed, most of today's pop stars hadn't been born yet, there was no hip-hop, it's their fifth decade of touring, and on and on. As most bands are celebrated for a decade together, we decided to ask Gibbons the secret of a happy band marriage. "I think first and foremost is the fact we still enjoy getting to do this more than anything we could imagine and somehow that translates into the nightly performance," Gibbons says. "Those two hours on stage, that's the real payoff. That's when we get together and we may not know what each other is gonna do. Some of it is because we're trying to outguess the next guy, trying to think of what he's gonna do next."

Gibbons is the best guitar player in R&R history, IMNSHO.

I'd go see them this year (haven't seen them live for 25 years) except I couldn't sit through Aerosmith.

Still love La Grange. Best song from the best 3-man band in history.

Yes. Bonn Scott’s been dead for awhile though. ZZ Top still has the original Tres Hombres.

AC/DC’s my all time favorite, I’m a blues junkie and for hardrock and their old stuff, it’s as pure as it gets.

As for ZZ Top

* Same line-up in the band for 40 years.
* No break ups or time off
* Rock just as hard now as they did in the late 60s
* Play like they mean it, not like some weak-ass, need some $, reunion tour

- Don’t got the patience, just slip forward to about 4:00 for a slow-hand geeetar solo.

When Billy used to open for Jimi Hendrix - he say that Billy Gibbons was the baddest ass blues guitarist he’d played with.

Any cheese-dick rocknroller can make a splash - the real deals stick around because they love it - these dudes show it.

One of ‘The Best Concerts Ever’ I had the pleasure of attending was a ZZ Top show. Man, they were AWESOME. 1986.

We had an absolute blast...dressed the parts in long black coats, sunglasses and Fedoras; the guys wore beards, etc. I seem to remember wearing roller skates for some reason, LOL!

Fun, Fun Fun!

Check out http://www.pandora.com and build yourself a ZZ Top Radio Station. :)

Steve Miller was memorable, too. First concert with ‘laser beams’ and lots of cutting edge ‘ee-lec-tronics.’ I can only imagine what paying customers expect these days, LOL!

Oh, and Pink Floyd? Don’t even get me started...

And since we’re talkin’ trash about 80’s rock, I have to brag again that Robin Zander *KISSED* me back when Cheap Trick was a Garage Band! Wa-Hoo! *SMOOCH*

(Thanks, Pissant. It’s been fun.) :)

Thing that probably kept them together more than anythign else is none of them seem to have developed a drug, drinking and/or money problems.

Not to mention Cliff Williams isn’t the band’s original bassist, and Phil Rudd left the group for about ten years or so.

Forty years with ZERO lineup changes really is an achievement.

And I’d turn that trick again, Baby! LOL!

He’s been a local boy (transplanted from Rockford, IL) for many, many years. But you THINK he’d pick up the phone...?!

Actually, he’s like FIFTY THREE now...absolutely ancient; while I haven’t aged a day since 1986... ;)

Agreed. He's pure blues/rock guitar genius. These guys are true musicians of unparalleled talent. I saw them live more than 20 years ago when I was in college, and I still enjoy their music today, particularly the older stuff, just as much as the first time I heard it. They are timeless.

I went to college with a girl from THE LaGrange... lived thru Marvin shutting it down too. Ah, the memories! My east coast brothers-in-law thought I’d have ZZ Top playing at the wedding since it was happening in Texas... ZZ top is well loved!

I remember seeing them around 20 something years ago. I think it was in Greensboro, NC.

Anyhow, they had a conveyor belt that ran the length of the stage. You could not see it because it was even with the stage floor. They would get on that thing and start walking, then someone would turn that belt on and it would appear that they had stopped moving even though they were still walking. They put on a great show.
