Coyote Invasion Feared in Long Beach After Cats Disappear
ktla ^ | May 25, 2009

Several cats have suddenly gone missing in one north Long Beach neighborhood and its feared coyotes may be to blame.

Lisa Kamieniecki says she watched a coyote kill her 14-year-old cat named "Bear" around 4 a.m. Saturday morning.

The coyote dropped the cat's body when her husband scared it off, Kamieniecki said.

She says two coyotes returned minutes later.

Kamieniecki called Animal Control, who told her that coyotes commonly feed at that time. But, if the animals make a daytime appearance or don't seem to fear humans or cars, that's something Animal Control would investigate, according to John Keisler, Manager of Animal Care Services in Long Beach.

Kamieniecki says she's surprised to see coyotes in such a populated area. She also feels that her cat was not the first family pet to be attacked.

She says she's noticed a number of "Missing Cat" signs in the neighborhood, and thinks the coyotes may be responsible for the disappearances.

She now fears that small children may fall prey to the hungry coyotes.

Keisler says this is the start of the wildlife season. He advises residents to bring small dogs and cats inside for the night and only walk them during the daytime. He also suggests removing sources of food, water and shelter to avoid attracting coyotes.

I have a 10-22 with a silencer on it that would put a stop to that coyote problem real quick. City limits or no. At 4AM, nobody is going to see a thing.

Too bad silencers are all but illegal. Sub sonic rounds are pretty quiet though.

I encountered a coyote in suburban Atlanta (Vinings, to be specific) a couple of years ago. There’s really no woods to speak of here either.

I saw a coyote in Tanglewood in Houston at 1pm 2 months ago. It was at least 3 miles from the bayou and running in that direction. I followed it a little way but had to stop at Woodway for traffic. I had heard that they were here but had not had a sighting till this one.

Now that’s what I need!
A coyote ought to keep those pesky neighborhood cats out of my garden!

I’ve tried everything... mousetraps, bb-guns...

It’s not just like there aren’t woods nearby.

More like Long Beach is the most unlikely place on the entire planet for wild animals. I’m series.

Pacific Ocean to the south. Pacific Ocean to the west. 75 miles of urban sprawl all the way up to Santa Monica to the north. Probably 100 miles of nothing but city to the northeast right through Compton and all the way up to. Heck all the way to Ontario. East; nothing but urban sprawl all the way out past Anaheim.

To the southeast, nothing but urban sprawl way out to Tustin.

I can’t think of a more unlikely place for coyotes, actually.

I guess there are some woods in Palos Verdes, which is sort of north of there. Not much though.

Those are some enterprising coyotes, that’s for sure.

Perhaps they carjacked somebody to get there.

1 in 10 Americans (higher actually) are infected with the worms their cats carry.

Stop it. You're making my butt itch!

Thank god we don't have them in NEPA. I keep my cats in but I feed many strays. We have raccoons and the occasional Bear that craps on a rock in my driveway.

Imagine that many garbage cans to raid, backyard pet dishes to clean out, not to mention backyard pets.

They must have thought they had died and gone to heaven...

They are highly adaptable, scavenger/hunter critters who blend in (looks like a dog at large to the untrained eye) well. Once humans quit hunting them, they get over their fear of humans pretty quickly and move in. They have even been seen in Central Park, NYC.
