So when I go to look at the diagrams that go with the Patent...am my Firefox says I need a plugin...I find that there is none available....perhaps I have to pay microsoft so I can see the diagrams?

Please don't misunderstand, I think this is a terrible idea, I just didn't see any avenues by which this would lead to litigation.

I do think that there may be a business case to do this. Say for example all I want out of life is for some PC to function as a server. Just host a bunch of web pages, maybe provide access or limited access depending upon 'rights' of various users - purchasing the full WinXP, Vista or Win7 would be overkill.

It all depends upon the wisdom of MSFT in picking and choosing - and this wisdom is not what one would expect from a company in a leadership position such as MSFT.

Well, sure, I have no problem with selling different products with different capabilities to meet the need. I do get a little leery of a SINGLE software package that has various feature sets that get turned on and off, when that software is written by Microsoft, and the gatekeeper software that decides what level you’ve paid Microsoft for and no doubt wants to verify that decision, is written by Microsoft. Between incompetence and the fact that their paycheck depends on how much functionality this app lets you use, that sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Why would it matter that they got a patent for this technology?

They could well have implemented these features without a patent. The patent merely allows them to prevent others from using the same technology. So, good news for Mac users etc.

The patent isn’t the issue here, but rather the threat to make new operating systems that will hamstring the user...like they do with all that DRM crap.

Well,...clearly they have implemented the techniques as described in the patent,....DRM is an example.

Very old news. The difference between Windows NT 3.51 Workstation, Server, and Advanced Server was a single value in the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\ProductOptions\ProductType

Choose values Winnt, Servernt, or Lanmannt.

Did that violate the DMCA?

Did that violate the DMCA?

Probably.

My rep, Rep. Dave Camp "(R)" voted for that abortion of representative democracy.

I will continue to point that out at every opportunity until he votes for legislation that revokes the DMCA.  The law is that bad, and any legislator that didn't vote against it sold his or her constituents out.
