NEW YORK - Alicia Istanbul woke up one recent Wednesday to find herself locked out of the Facebook account she opened in 2007, one Facebook suddenly deemed fake. The stay-at-home mom was cut off not only from her 330 friends, including many she had no other way of contacting, but also from the pages she had set up for the jewelry design business she runs from her Atlanta-area home. Although Istanbul understands why Facebook insists on having real people behind real names for every account, she wonders why the online hangout didn't simply ask before acting. "They should at least give you a warning, or at least give you the benefit of the doubt," she said. "I was on it all day. I had built my entire social network around it. That's what Facebook wants you to do."

Hmmm. I don’t know. I’ve lived in 9 countries and about 2 dozen cities. I’ve got friends spread out all over the world. My facebook account is where I keep up with the ones who are elsewhere. I keep up with my physically close friends the same way anybody else would- texting on the phone and face to face. But I had lost contact with many of my other friends out there in the world and facebook allowed me to find them again. I think it’s a really cool thing. I was only signed up for a few days when I had friends I hadn’t talked to in years contacting me. One had moved from Skopje to Cambodia and I never knew. Now, I can keep up with these people.
Dick Stewshort, Mike Oxlong.
And using Facebook as the main means of contacting people that she even expects to earn part of a living from is just foolish. What are the something-for-nothing people going to do when these social networking sites start charging for the privilege of sharing banalities?

I have a friend who is a Chiroptractor his name is Dr. Backman. Seriously.
My orthopedic Dr. is Dr. Butcher and his assistant is Susie Deathrow.
My Dentist is Dr. Tandy Centers. Probably not funny to you but I think it is.
These are not just aquaintances. In many cases these are people I have fornicated with ;-) Some of them are women I knew who went on to get married and change their names (as married women do sometimes). I had looked and looked for them fruitlessly over time. Facebook allowed them to find me. These are people I want in my life and facebook is the only means of having that (I can't be in dozens of places at once).
I'd be pretty pissed off if Facebook suddenly canceled my subscription because they thought my name was made up. I'd also be pretty P.O.-ed if they started charging. There's other ways for them to make money. I'm sure you don't use Google- you being someone who is against us evil 'something for nothing' people. But, I use google all the time and I WILL NOT pay for it. If they started charging, I'd just find a search engine that does it for free. But that's just me. I'm sure you're ok with paying for it?
Facebook can charge if they want to. But they'll lose most of their users if they do. We'll just go somewhere else.
I don't understand the animosity towards facebook users. It is at least the same level of banality as political forums- yet here we all are.
Apparently, our family has an odd sense of humor.

Some of my friends in Facebook are registered as Wilma Fingerdoo and Whiskey T. Foxtrot...
So, it’s ok to give your real info on facebook? A relative wants me to sign up and visit her account. But I wasn’t too sure about giving my real name and info. Haven’t signed up yet.
Are there any problems people have with the site?
Why would her parents name her Alicia?
Excuse the hasty posting:
Why would her parents name her Alicia? Pretty weird.
good one
You’re always taking your chances with giving out your information into the public domain. That’s all I’ll really say. I thought that in my situation it was worth the trade-off. Obviously, I might revise that risk-assessment if a situation arises that causes me to.
You see a lot of folk who don’t post their pictures or any personal data. You can set your privacy shield so that only people who request it from you can view your page.
It’s just your call. You can always cancel if you sign up and decide you don’t like it.
