Barring the possibility that someone has brought in a snake from some other country and released it that IS a cottonmouth water moccasin. It has the triangle head of a pit viper and I don’t know of another American pit viper that might be that color. I have seen many cottonmouths and the color of that snake is not out of the range of variations for one. Some are lighter and show patterning but some are almost black with no visible pattern. Copperheads also vary a lot but I don’t think that is in the copperhead range.

Looks like a King Snake to me. Too bad you killed it. They’re very beneficial animals. They eat mice and rats and such.

I was wrong on the name, its the Texas indigo snake. Endangered and feeds on rattle snakes and other snakes.

It's a water moccasin/ cottonmouth, no doubt.
The black body and white marking on the side and underneath the head.
Native to the south including Houston.

That was a water moccasin. We used to see them quite often at DCS. We left the dead ones lying around as a warning to the live ones, haven’t seen on in years so the warnings must have worked.

Damn...you got a ton of replies already, and I haven't scrolled 'em yet.
You're right, it's weird......head shaped like a rattler, thick fat body like a rattler, but coloration and tail of a black snake.
I'd say you got some sort of Obamanized morph pit viper in your yard. Good you offed it.
