The Maya civilization is a Mesoamerican civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, as well as its art, architecture, and mathematical and astronomical systems. Initially established during the Preclassic period, many of these reached their apogee of development during the Classic period (c. 250 CE to 900 CE), and continued throughout the Post classic period until the arrival of the Spanish. At its peak, it was one of the most densely populated and culturally dynamic societies in the world. (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_civilization)
From this Mesoamerican civilization and its astronomical systems arose a calendar with predictions which would become a topic of end time events for the 21st century. This remarkable calendar of the Ancient Mayans predicts that an event of major proportions will take place on December 21, 2012. Unfortunately, the Mayans did not specify what the major event will be but doomsday believers hold tight to the notion that the world will end on this day. Scientists have various assumptions, theories, and philosophies as to what scientifically could happen. Their theories include major earth changing events such as Galactic alignment, Pole shift, Solar magnetic reversal, and Solar maximum. They believe these events will result from threats such as Meteorite or Comet impact, Gamma rau burst, Extraterrestrials, or nuclear explosions.
According to researchers the Mayans astronomical predictions were based on a collection of systematic calendars similar to the ones used by earlier Mesoamerican civilizations such as the Zapotec, Olmec, and Aztecs. These calendars date as far back as 6th century BCE. Among these systematic calendars were basically two main calendars. One was solar and the other was based on the movement of the planet Venus, in conjunction with other planets and stars. The two calendars overlapped each other and each was based on a five thousand year cycle. As one was ending the other was already in progress. Therefore, its not that the Mayans were predicting the end of the world. Based on their calculations of a five thousand year cycle they predicted that one event calendar was ending on December 21, 2012 and another one beginning on December 22, 2012. In other words, they were simply predicting the end of the five thousand year solar or planetary calendar. Although their scientists and astronomers did look for and anticipated natural disasters, they did not view them as world ending events. Modern day research suggests that the December 21, 2012 date is related to a not-so-well known phenomenon called the precession of the Equinoxes -or- a five thousand year planetary cycle.
The numeric predictions of the Mayan calendar are based on the computation of the Mayan value of pi whose value is more reliable than any European pi. This makes the Mayan calendar remarkably accurate. However, it does not predict the end of the world in 2012. In my opinion, the assumptions of world ending events is another doomsday prediction on the level of Y2K born out of the human need for a cosmic change or a solution to human suffering on this planet, and revenge against those who impose such sufferings.
So what are the Christians responses to this doomsday prediction? Christians can be classified as the group most likely to believe in such doomsday predictions based on their understandings and acceptance of end time events as described in the book of Revelation. However, most mature Christians conclude that this is just another bogus assumption born out of a lack of Biblical knowledge. They cite one text from the Bible to justify this position which is found in the book of Matthew 24:36. But of that day and hour knows no man, neither angels of Heaven nor the Son, but my Father.
Whats your viewpoint or predictions for December 21, 2012?
After freaking out about Y2K and selling everything and building a self-sustaining complex in the moutains of Montana complete with five years of groceries and two generators (the buttheads at Home Depot wouldn’t take them back) and losing my wife and eight children who didn’t want to move in the process...
I think that I will sit this one out.
Sincerely S. Vivalist
What do u expect from a poster able to also devine this “Christians can be classified as the group most likely to believe in such doomsday predictions based on their understandings and acceptance of end time events as described in the book of Revelation.”
2112 is an album by RUSH based on ANTHEM by Ayn Rand.
Beat me to it. Pi has been calculated by Western mathematicians to trillions of digits. Somehow I don’t think the Mayas got more accurate results.
Your 89th digit is wrong!
I won’t go so far as to say 2012 has anything to do with Bible prohecy, I don’t think it does. But a person would have to have their head in a hole not to see that the World’s timeclock is allot closer to midnight than it was just a few years ago. Since Obama was elected things seem to be moving way too fast not to see that something BIG, and terrifying has been set in motion. Something foretold in the Book of Daniel and in Revelation.
When I was a young Christian in the 1970s I got caught up in all of those end-time books lining the bibles book stores shelves. The most notable was Hal Lindseys, The Late Great Planet Earth. Although they were fascinating reading, so much of it seemed like too far fetched to believe it could happen in my life time.
Cashless Society? In the 1970s the thought of using a debit card almost anyplace, including vending machines and parking lots seems just too far out. Well today I go weeks without paper money or coin. I can probably can go without it all together, if it wasnt for the coffee kitty at work.
ONE World Leader? This was always a great mystery. How could one man become so popular so fast as to set him self up as God in a short 3 ½ years. Mystery no more. I am not saying Obama is the Antichrist, but his coming from nowhere in such a short time to become a Godhead among his Koolaid drinking followers that spread beyond our borders, is just to strange. It shows you how fast the real Antichrist can enter the World Stage.
World Government? Hard to fathom in the 1970s. Now, its something even the main stream media is picking up on. And the World Wide Web, not something Hal Lindsey even dreamed of, now makes a World Government an easier thing to accomplish.
They rounded it to 3. :->

maybe
All I can say is that you’d better make sure that your liquor cabinet and refrigirator are empty and the air condioning has been turned off when you leave the house and don’t bother buying Christmas presents.
you are missing a couple of numbers lol
Sorry, it was a bad joke.
troll! which couple?
I had never heard of this until a teenage family member told me that there are a number of her peers who have flocked to a Doomsday Cult surrounding this date.
Na...he will be too busy scraping the gold leaf off the picture frames to bother with pranks....
And notice we have had all of these or at least attempts at some point in the future, but Jesus said the signs will be like a quickening. Like labor pains, you can have all sorts of things happen seperately, but when they happen all at once, you are THERE.
It is peculiar how these two mutually exclusive events point to similar conclusions.
It reminds me of OJ Simpson,,,, the mutually exclusively unrelated events by them selves are okay but their wummation only points to the incrediblly high probability of total guilt.
THX, will check it out.
Did the Mayans predict the end of their own civilization?
