Google Gets Goats to Mow Lawn at Company Headquarters
Fox News ^ | Monday, May 04, 2009 | Frank Carnevale

Last week, Google brought in a herd of goats to mow the grass on its Mountain View, Calif. headquarters rather than using lawnmowers.

The company said that it wanted to take a more "low-carbon" approach with the goats reducing the company's contribution to air and noise pollution.

PETA responded to a TechCrunch call about the goats, saying that though they have no problem with letting goats do what they do, they do have concerns about how they were transported and whether they have enough shelter and water.

Google said that though the goats were not technically employees, "each goat is entitled to a free organic lunch."

Turns out another tech company uses goat power to mow its property. Yahoo has also employed goats to graze their grounds .

If watching goats eat grass and run around the hills of the companies headquarters is your thing, enjoy the scene captured in this 19-minute video clip .

A sure sign that Google is doomed.

Lower carbon, maybe. But higher in Methane most likely.

PETA will not like this either. Isn't this animal slavery?

Hey Google!

Haven’t you heard that animal farts are worse than automobiles?

Unless you have genetically engineered non-farting goats you are exacerbating the problem!

Hey, I’m no greenie, but not ALL green ideas are bad. Personally, I think this is a great story except that PETA just keeps on making themselves look bad. They seem to just HAVE to find some fault with every effort involving animals. I’m thinking a goat mower sounds like a grand plan.

If they’re anything like cows, the methane they release may do more to contribute to global warming than the CO2 from lawnmowers would.

Only a matter of time before they are at the White House.

A sheep mower sounds even better. At least then you got some wool to sell. But the problem with using animals to eat your grass is that the most desirable grass species for pretty lawns is the least desirable for food. Ya know what’s the most desirable for food? WEEDS. No joke.

There was another discussion on FR maybe a couple of years ago about using goats as lawnmowers. The consensus of those in the know was that people who try this don’t usually reckon with how serious a problem the goat poop will be.

On the plus side, doesn’t that mean they’ll keep down the weeds while letting the grass grow a little longer?

“sounds like a grand plan”

I like it too, but the poop will take YEARS to disintegrate on the lawn.

Hum? Goats in general like bitter plants, brush, briars, evergreens, and shrubs etc. Sheep make better grass grazers. Goats prefer to browse and can be real picky eaters. Any tree's they have unless protected the goats will eat the bark also. If the goats have their horns male or female the company is in for a huge surprise there as well. As for shelter? A basic open shed will do. They have to have a place if it rains for several days to dry their hoofs.

The water needs? If the grounds have a sprinkler system watering the grass that will do them plenty. In general goats get most of their water from what they eat. It's the winter months when foliage dies down you have to worry a little bit more about water.

a goat herder in the white house? That would be unseemly.

The dingbats that inhabit Google might want to rethink goat droppings on the lawn.

There are several main parasites that goats carry:

Haemonchus contortus (barberpole worm)
Ostertagia (round worms including stomach worm, Cooper’s worm, wire worm, hookworm, threadworm, whipworm, and nodular worm)
Trichostrongylus (lung worms)
Tapeworms
Coccidiosis
Parelaphostrongylus tenuis (meningeal or brain worm)

goats are actually far more efficient at turning foodstuffs into milk and energy than cows are...i do not ever recall a goat farming in the 20 years I spent at home while my parents raised them...that includes the morning and evening milkingsI had to do before and after school...
