This beautiful translucent dish belonged to a wealthy East Londoner living in Roman Britain 1,700 years ago.
The rare 'millefiori' bowl - meaning 'one thousand flowers' was unearthed by archaeologists in London and is thought to be the first find of its kind in the western Roman empire. Researchers believe it will give fresh insight into life in Roman Britain.
The dish is made up of hundreds of translucent blue indented glass petals, bordered with white embedded in a bright red glass background.

Is there as established amount of time required before you can rob a grave? Do you need to have an archeology degree first?
I'm sure I could find some nice jewelry in the graves of several wealthy people in the area.
Wow.... truly a work of fine art
......They just don’t make ‘em like they use to. .....
A few years ago I was part of a group touring the glass studios of a collage of fine arts.
At the beginning of the tour, the guide, the glass department head asked.....” What is the difference between a Domino’s large peperoni pizza and a person with a masters in fine arts in glass?”
The pizza can feed a family of four
>>Beautiful.
To say the least. I think you’d be hard pressed to duplicate it even now.
Thanks for the post. It’s beautiful!
Is it microwave safe?
What a wonderful treasure! Beautiful.
It was reconstructed from broken shards. “Intact” just means that all the bits were found.
ROFL. Very clever.
Do they consider collages fine art?
Sorry, couldn’t resist!
The teacher replied that the differences between a grave robber and an archaeologist is.... A FEW HUNDRED YEARS.
Also the intent of the grave robber comes into play. If you ran across a priceless gold artifact, would you write a paper about it and put in in a museum; or would you melt it down and sell the gold? If your intent is to do the former you are likely an archaeologist; if you are tempted to do the latter, you are a grave robber (even if you have a degree in archeology).
.....Do they consider collages fine art?.....
but of course..... but that is in a different studio..... that would be in the paper studio.
Simple. UPS never got their hands on it.
Very nice.Must have been difficult piecing it back together.Wonder what the $$$ value is?
