Baby attacked, killed by two pit bulls in San Antonio, Texas

A SEVEN-month-old boy has been killed by two pit bull dogs at his grandmother's house.

Texan news website Mysanantonio.com reports Izaiah Gregory Cox was attacked when his grandmother left the room to warm milk bottles. She was also attacked and injured by the dogs.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said officers had to shoot the dogs so that paramedics could get into the house.

"What can you say about the death of a seven-month-old baby at the hands of pit bulls?" he asked. "It's senseless without words."

Yep, I'm a great believer in Full Disclosure.

If I do breed her, it will be to another dog in our club, and the pups would probably go to other club members. So I will be just as honest as I know how. As long as they're just carriers, it doesn't matter -- just have to be careful who you breed to.

I think that good stud dogs with the nn type are going to be VERY popular for awhile!

Yes, I am just amazed at how far they’ve come with DNA.

And people who hold to their personal anecdotal experience over broader statistics aren’t really too much worth attempting to reason with.

. . . personal anecdotal experience over broader statistics

I think that you may be wrong here.

Years of actual experience in the field is in most cases superior to statistics, especially statistics generated by folks with an axe to grind. "Figures lie, and liars figure," remember?

FReepers are highly suspicious of the gun statistics cited by the Brady Bunch, ABC, and others anxious to infringe on gun rights. And it often (if not always) turns out that the so-called statistics have been doctored (e.g. counting 20 year old gangbangers as 'children') or are outright fraudulent (as in the case of the Emory history professor who wound up being fired for falsifying his data).

We usually are more inclined to listen to experienced shooters, former military, and other folks who have actual experience with firearms, rather than just uncritically swallow possibly skewed 'statistics' whole.

But even though news outlets have (as in this case) often falsely identified dogs as "pit bulls" in order to whip up a frenzy (or sell papers), too many people want to take the statistics as gospel truth, and ignore folks who have years of experience with actual dog training.

Why?

My Chocolate Labrador has a foot fetish. He likes to lean on people, but his real delight is laying on your foot or feet (once I noticed that he was laying on all three people in a room’s feet simultaneously; a trifecta).

I think he knows that if he is asleep on your foot you cannot go anywhere without him. He rests his head on my foot like a pillow and I hear him snoring in about ten seconds.

He is ultra passive and submissive. When bitten on the face suddenly by a dog all he did was a bark in a sort of “HEY, don’t bite me!” and then a whine to me “HEY, that dog bit me!”.

He was raised with small terriers and used to let them take his toys and pretended that they would knock him over, etc.

He is the sweetest most loving dog I have ever known.

They make the Chocolate ones extra sweet. ;)

My Choc loves to sit on your feet or lean on your side, but she's never done a trifecta. I think she likes to concentrate on one person at a time.

I don't think it's a dominance thing; she is extremely soft and not dominant at all with people. But she is a world champion schmoozer. The very first night she boarded with our trainer, she was supposed to be outside in the kennel in the dog yard, but she managed to work her way into the garage, into the house, into the kitchen for supper, into the TV room after supper, and then pranced into the bedroom and lay down on the floor beside her trainer's bed. She is an exemplary house dog!

With dogs, she has her limits, because she's 9 years old now and a little cranky. She'll put up with almost anything from a puppy, but if an adolescent or older dog puts a paw on her back she will whirl around and snarl a warning. She's never bitten another dog though, other than Ruby, and Ruby had it coming (and I think that was a miscalculation, she caught Ruby's very pendulous upper lip with one tooth).

They do make the Chocolates extra sweet.

My dad had a rescued dog named Rosie the Riveter, angel dog with a gargoyle head; that actually bit his hand in the act of feeding her. Talk about one of the cardinal sins of dog-dom! Don't bite the hand that feeds you is axiomatic.

My dad was feeding Rosie, Canyon the golden, and a visiting puppy. My dad was dividing it up when Rosie growled at the puppy to not sniff near HER bowl. He let them eat and then went to add a bit stuck to the side of the can to Rosie's bowl. Rosie saw the hand coming in and, no doubt thought, “Puppy! I warned you by growling once, now you get bit!”

It was a bite commensurate with an old bitch scolding a pup, didn't even hurt my dads hand; but he was shocked! Rosie was even MORE shocked, she looked rather sheepish and carefully disengaged jaws from around master's hand.

Poor Rosie! She thought it was the puppy! A mistake that ANY dog could make (puppies are persistent).

I’ll listen to those with years in the field whose perspective also accommodates broader realities, thanks. They’re out there and I’m off of these pit bull threads—where rationality seems to be in short supply.

Don't you see a total ban on pits would not solve your problems in any way?

An idiot like that would simply get another breed and be right back in business the next day. Tougher restrictions on breeding dogs of any breed (puppy mills are bad news no matter the breed) would help your situation, just as laws being made tougher and enforced against owners that don't follow laws like the leash law.

That is why the owner is the key and not the breed. People keep saying there is no comparison to the banning of pits to the banning of firearms- but the comparison is that bad firearm owners (criminals) are used as examples of why no one should be trusted with or allowed a firearm. It is the same to point to bad dog owners and the results of their bad decisions as an example of why a particular breed should be banned.

You should be on the band wagon for tougher leash laws and kennel laws and for them to be enforced, you should be outraged that you had to make repeated calls about the violations of your neighbor of the dog laws already on the books. You should be on the bandwagon of banning stupid neighbors. Banning pit bulls would really not solve your problem in any way and would only punish responsible owners of pits- just as firearm restrictions have no impact on criminals but punish law abiding citizens- think about it.

Idiots like your neighbor would at first simply ignore any ban on pits until he is forced to give them up-after all if they are banned they will be scarce and even more valuable to him. He doesn't respect the laws about dog ownership now- why would he respect a new one? At the point he would be forced to give the pits up he would switch to another breed and you would have the same issues- after all he doesn't sound like the type to take up breeding say Yorkies for example. After all Yorkie puppies are worth far more than pit puppies now so it's not just a money issue for him.

BTW- I love Yorkies!! And I hate stupid neighbors, we have one that lets his pack of hunting hounds run loose to kill people's small dogs and cats, and he thinks it is funny- I have small dogs and cats but I'm not trying to ban hounds- or even rednecks (since I am one) but would love to ban stupid neighbors.

Well, truth is sometimes in short supply -- as was proved with first hand information about the story that started this thread.

If you prefer doctored statistics and false news stories to actual experience, there isn't much that anybody can say to convince you otherwise.

Hopefully you don't apply that same standard generally . . . . .

An idiot like that would simply get another breed and be right back in business the next day.

Truer words never spoken.

I can remember when German Shepherds were the thug breed of choice. Then it was Dobermans (not helped by a movie in which Dobes were bank robbers). Then Rotties. Now it's pit bulls.

An evil thug could take some of the aggressive field Labs or Goldens that we were talking about up-thread, and with a program of breeding meanest-to-meanest could come up with a pretty dangerous dog eventually. It would take longer with a retriever, but it could be done.

And any of the dog breeds that are fairly 'sharp' and aggressive - a good number of the working dogs and the herding dogs - could be bred into household terrors much more quickly.

The problem is the idiotic, insecure, shiftless trash that would want to do such a thing in the first place. Obviously once they've created their product, the product is a problem also. But you're not going to get rid of the problem until you make the price of breeding mean dogs too high for the trash to tolerate. Jail, fines, immense damages. Otherwise they will create their product from whatever breed is available.

Well, dang, if he's breaking the drug laws, breaking the public nuisance laws, breaking the zoning laws, breaking the leash laws . . . .

. . . you don't have a dog problem. You have a local law enforcement problem.
