Drifting Away
Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adversity? —Job 2:10

Imagine relaxing on a rubber raft along the shore, eyes closed, soaking up the sun and listening to the gentle crash of waves. You don’t have a care in the world—until you open your eyes! Suddenly the shore is alarmingly distant.

We tend to drift like that spiritually. It’s subtle yet shocking when we suddenly realize how far we’ve drifted from God. The point of departure begins when Satan steals our affection for our loving Creator by putting a deceitful twist on our experiences and causing us to suspect God instead of trust Him.

Consider Job and his wife. Both had plenty of reasons to be mad at God. Their children were dead, their fortune lost, and Job’s health destroyed. His wife told him, “Curse God and die!” But Job replied, “Shall we indeed accept good from God, and . . . not accept adversity?” (Job 2:9-10).

There are many attitudes that can set us adrift: believing that we need more than God to be happy; placing meaningful relationships above loyalty to God; thinking God should live up to our expectations; resisting His reproofs; turning a deaf ear when His Word is uncomfortable.

If you’re beginning to drift, remember to stay close to the One who is the sole source of satisfaction.

Lord, help me to stay close to You
And trust You more each day,
So when the storms of life appear
I will not drift away. —Sper

To avoid drifting away from God, stay anchored to the Rock.

Amen! Thank you for this Daily Bread lesson this morning, Mr. Mayor! Adversity comes to all but with His help we get through it and are thankful for His love.

A Poem for New Puppy Owners

Don't smell crotches, don't eat plants.
Don't steal food or underpants.
Don't eat my socks, don't grab my hair...
DON'T RIP THE STUFFING FROM THAT CHAIR!
Don't eat those peas, don't touch that bush,
Don't chew my shoes, what IS this mush?!?
Eat your cookies, drink your drink,
Outta the toilet! Outta the sink!

AWAY FROM THE LITTER BOX, IT'S FOR THE CAT!
(and must you kiss me after that?!?)
Raising a puppy is not for the lazy,
Those rugrats are funny but also quite crazy.
Don't despair through the toil and the strife,
'Cause after three years you'll get back your life!
So let's go for walkies, so you can do your "thing",
And maybe I'll get back my good diamond ring!

Heres a challenge, the following poem (slightly political in tone) is based on Aristophanes’ comedy ‘Knights’ (Greek Hippeîs) The play is above all else an unbridled attack on Cleon, who was one of the most important political figures in Athens in the late 420s BCE and who was a personal enemy of the poet. Two years earlier, Cleon had prosecuted Aristophanes for “slandering Athens” (in his play “The Babylonians”). Aristophanes was convicted of the charge. “Knights” is also a strident attack on the politics of the day, particularly the ease with which Democracy could be corrupted. (sound familiar?)
See what sort of picture you think might fit this one.

The Play

T’were in the house of Demos, that citizen-body fair
old Paphlogonian Obama, is up to his tricks with flair
The slaves they are a learnin’, and coming up to speed
but the plots they are a growin’, as if a healthy weed
Obama is stealing the dinar coins of the child yet unborn
and some who supported him, are becoming slightly torn
But alas, from the frozen land, a woman of power comes
the valiant warrior, the Palin for an accounting of the sums
Obama and his hounds set cry, ‘Hope and Change’ so loud
and each is praying their not questioned by the crowd
Then the Knight of EIB gives strong support to the right
and Paphlogonian Obama is staggered by such might
Valiant the struggle back in elective combat fierce and red
ousting that young Paphlogonian, and freedoms are now fed
Back to the hinterlands of Chicago to activist bold again
Obama complains to the uncaring, how it was he was binned
Capital takes hold again and businesses grow anew
and those on the right get back to doing as they do
But taxes still oppressive, so things really haven’t changed
but at least its familiar, so we can accept it though deranged
