They had Jorge, Allison and Jasmine in the bottom 3. two out of three.

The thing people need to remember is that Dial Idol’s results are based on their software. So their numbers are based on people using their software. It boils down to do they have enough people using their software to be an accurate gauge of ‘the public’.

Idol: Anoop & Megan Joy’s Country-Night Comebacks
March 18, 2009

The big news on country night was the return of Anoop Desai, who tanked last week with Michael Jackson’s “Beat It.” Chastened by all the criticism, he was back on top with Willie Nelson’s “Always on My Mind,” which he sang with a reverent hush. This time, said Simon, “You’ve just managed to go from zero to hero.”

Megan Joy Corkrey, who’d actually been hospitalized with the flu, also had a comeback triumph with “Walking After Midnight.” Dressed in a brown and blue gown, she made the song sound like a trippy-bluesy turn on a ballroom stage — very “Midnight At the Oasis.” Randy said he was “quite impressed.” Simon agreed: “You should have flu every week,” he told her.

Most of the singers aren’t huge country fans, but most of them found a secure and even successful pop middle ground. Michael Buble look-alike Matt Giraud seemed so in control crooning Carrie Underwood’s “So Small,” Simon praised him as the competition’s underdog — in this instance, even better than Danny Gokey, who, inexplicably bundled into a snow-white safari jacket, took a while before clicking on another Underwood hit, “Jesus Take the Wheel,” with his usual throaty earnestness.

Kris Allen did a very nice job — introspective and soulful — with Garth Brooks’s “To Make You Feel My Love.” Simon, surprised and impressed, said, “You’ve actually got a shot at doing really well.” Randy was wowed, too: “Tender moments from my dog Kris!”

Scott MacIntyre, 23, tried something similar with Martina McBride’s “Wild Angels.” But the judges seemed rather bored, and Paula and Simon got into one of their ridiculous tiffs over whether (as Paula maintained) he was too dependent on the piano. Wonder if he’s in trouble.

At least Allison Iraheta should be secure: True to precocious form, she sang a window-rattling version of Patty Loveless’s “Blame It on Your Heart.” “You could sing the alphabet,” said Kara, “and sing it well.”

Most surprising disappointment: Alexis Grace should have killed with Dolly Parton’s classic “Jolene” — she even looks like Dolly! — but she sang it with a sort of overwrought grimness that struck the judges wrong, for the most part.

Less surprising disappointment: Lil Rounds, who said the only country hits she knew were featured in movies. Trying to get away from R&B, she ran into a rough patch with McBride’s “Independence Day.”

Ironically, the most country of the bunch may very well be the one to go — and miss the chance to sing on tour with the top 10. Michael Sarver managed to have fun plowing through the lyrics to Brooks’s “Ain’t Goin’ Down (Til the Sun Comes Up).” But he was the first singer of the night, and two hours later it was hard even to remember the big guy.

The craziest moment: Adam Lambert’s interpretation of “Ring of Fire,” which he sang as a sensual, Middle Eastern-tinged love cry. The week’s unofficial country mentor, the imposing Randy Travis, couldn’t say much more than “You’re scaring me.” Kara found it “a little strange.” Randy, who was enthusiastic, said it made him think of Nine Inch Nails meets country. Simon was, in his own zesty way, appalled: “What the hell was that?” he said. “I think there are a lot of people throwing their television sets out the window.”

Maybe, but you can bet they won’t throw out Adam. – Tom Gliatto

For those wondering about the MEgan name change.

It was done at MEgan’s request. Corkrey is her ex-husband’s name, and as she realized she had a chance to go far in this competition she decided she did not want his name associated with her career. Hence she is now just Megan Joy.

The kid is a flamer... but that was a cool remake.

I thought it was fantastic. But I'm a huge Cure fan. LOL.

Wonder if Simon’s remarks were Idol strategery to save Adam? Nah, I think Simon really thought it was horrible.

They are a fairly accurate predictor although not 100%. And, they don’t get the text votes which is a major source of votes.

9. Adam Lambert - Ring of Fire - Vocally, possible the best vocal performance of the night, but the song arrangement was absolutely horrid. I thought I was watching a massacre scene in a Quentin Tarentino movie, but without the awesome slow motion blood spattering visuals.

Brilliant.

If she really is the lowest vote getter, we may get to see the judges deliberate a little bit over saving her. They didn’t even think twice about eliminating the two last week. They just might pause a bit with her since she is better than some that will remain. She probably won’t win but there are several that should go before her. jmo

Alexis is the bottom on Dial Idol. If it turns out that she is the bottom vote getter it would blow the whole conspiracy theory out of the water.

I can't believe she's that low. I <3 her!

(I thought they were all a little mean to the "top 4"... as in "Look... the fix is out." LOL)

Presumably, they would want to "fix" the show to assure the maximum number of viewers and potential record buyers down the road.

To determine who would best help them accomplish that goal, they could toss the 30,000,000 votes aside each week, and construct some elaborate system to accurately measure each contestant's popularity amongst the general population. To get the most accurate reading, they would need the largest possible sample. They could spend millions constructing this system to rate the contestants and then do their very best to keep it secret, so that they could ignore the vote, yet avoid going to jail for fraud and losing the most enormous cash cow in the history of television.

Or they could just count the 30,000,000 votes, which would obviously be the best indicator of viewer popularity by far.

But people love conspiracy theories.

The unnamed person behind the scenes might not have gotten a raise, was treated badly by management or had something else go bad.

ALWAYS take with a big grain of salt

When you see Adam’s performance, please report back.

Reporting back, as requested, Peggy, and am pinging Jonny and several other regulars to spread the word that Billboard absolutely SLAMMED Lambert. Whooohooo! Score an important one for the good side for a change. The entire music industry lives and dies by the Billboard charts and reviews, so this is bound to leave a mark on the AI producers.

Here is a link to the full Billboard recap of last night's performances. I'll just list their rankings below, and then put their complete statement about Lambert here for everyone on the thread to read.

1. Kris Allen - "To Make You Feel My Love"
2. Anoop Desai - "You Were Always On My Mind"
3. Matt Giraud - "So Small"
4. Allison Iraheta - "Blame It On Your Heart"
5. Danny Gokey - "Jesus, Take The Wheel"
6. Lil Rounds - "Independence Day"
7. Megan Joy - "Walking After Midnight"
8. Alexis Grace - "Jolene"
9. Scott Macintyre: "Wild Angels"
10. Michael Sarver - "Ain't Goin' Down ('Til the Sun Comes Up)"
11. Adam Lambert - "Ring Of Fire"

Billboard's recap statement about Adam Lambert:

Here are some of the notes we jotted down during Adam Lambert's ridiculous Eastern-influenced/pseudo-glam take on "Ring of Fire..." Borderline pornographic. Phantom of the Opera on crack. Unflattering angles. Ear-piercing wailing. Man in Black turning red in his grave. But perhaps Simon Cowell said it best when he described Adam's performance as "indulgent rubbish." Rather than desecrating the great Johnny Cash's legacy, couldn't he have tried Glen Campbell's "Rhinestone Cowboy" instead? What we're asking ourselves is, if Adam had auditioned with that or a similar left-of-center reinterpretation, would the judges have shooed him out of the room along with the other just-for-laughs hopefuls? We don't anticipate he'll be voted off this week, but imagine if they had to pull out the save card for his overambitious ass? And this early? Well, if nothing else, Adam sure knows how to bring on the drama.

Here in Los Angeles, both local morning news shows also panned his performance, although they were more politically correct about how they expressed it. For example, on Good Day L.A., on the FOX affiliate here, Steve Edwards said it was a weird "exotic" performance, when it was obvious he meant "erotic," and not in a good way.

In closing, Peggy, here's my opinion, as requested:

I think Adam Lambert has spent way too much of his life living in the seamy, dark under-belly of the gay world. Plenty of people are gay in their sexual lives, but are otherwise normal and decent in other aspects of their lives. Lambert obviously is not that type of person. He's the gay equivalent of female floozies who've seen better days, but who now work at grinding it away in the worst, cheapest strip clubs.

Underneath his makeup, Lambert's skin is all broken out. Still in his 20's, his looks are already going. His face looked bloated last night.

He looks hard, sly, even dangerous in some photos. Cheap sleaziness oozes from every one of his pores, and I don't know if he can ever get it off him now. He has no place in the mainstream world, because he rejected it years ago.

Bottom line, when I think of Adam Lambert, I think what a waste. Here's a tall, handsome guy with an amazing talent. The world has so much good to offer a young person like that, but he's throwing it all away to get way down in the sewer. Not only does he appear to like it there, but he clearly wants to drag the kids of mainstream America down there with him.

I thought there was a morals clause in the AI contract. They've released other contestants in the past for behavior that wasn't as egregious as Lambert's. This guy is NOT commercial on Mainstream Top 40, so he'll be another black eye to AI's credibility if he wins.

Excellent observation and feedback. You hit it right on the nail with, “He has no place in the mainstream world, because he rejected it years ago.” Thank you - I was curious to hear what your thoughts were.

There’s only ONE judges’ save...no way they use it this early on..it would take away the drama from later shows..
