Gary Cooper's John Doe was a decent guy.
How about "A Face In The Crowd" with Andy Griffith and Patricia Neal?
Patricia Neal plays a small-town radio personality (AKA David Axelrod as city desk editor and reporter at the Chicago Tribune?) who finds a bum in jail named "Lonesome" Rhodes (Barack Obama "discovered" by Bill Ayers?) and turns him into a popular folksy-but-wise entertainer who uses charming rural colloquialisms to cast judgments on larger issues of politics and government on his own network TV show.
Eventually, Lonesome Rhodes begins advising politicians on how to appeal to the people, but as his own popularity grows, so does his ego, as well has his disdain for the "little people" that he came from.
He begins belittling his staff, mocking his audience, and ordering everyone around, including Patricia Neal (who discovered him). Eventually, she undermines him by broadcasting live a rant of Rhodes' where he shows his arrogant behavior and disrespect for his audience. Rhodes' show is canceled, he is now shunned by everyone, and yells in rage at what happened to him as the scene fades to black.
