I think Flakes by Frank Zappa describes the whole thing pretty neatly.

My son and I used to watch these shows before he went to bed during his teens and later he gave me the videos and even later all the episodes downloaded. It was a wonderfully bonding time. I just loved Mrs. Slocum!
