Apple’s Safari 4 Public Beta is a UI disaster
Saturday, February 28, 2009 - 03:28 PM EST"A few days ago, Apple surprised everyone by releasing the first beta of Safari 4, the company's latest version of their WebKit browser. While I generally love Safari on the Mac (my browser of choice on that side of the fence), I've never felt as comfortable with it on the Windows side of things. In any case, this latest beta has made a very bold move in the interface department, and I'm sad to say that it's not for the better," Thom Holwerda writes for OS News.
"This is where it goes wrong for Safari 4. There, the tabs are the titlebar, leading to a rather schizophrenic UI widget: it has to act as a titlebar and a tab bar, and consequently, does neither of the two very well. Since you have to be able to drag the window via this new tabtitlebar widget, Apple had to create a special and small handle for moving tabs, while making the tabs themselves the place to drag the window. This design decision is something I expect from a 6 year old who writes his first tabbed text editor - not from a company that prides itself on UI design," Holwerda writes.
"That's not all, though. Because Apple wanted the tabs to make up the titlebar, they had to ditch this well-established concept of spatial memory, making tabs change size continiously, since even if you have one tab, it needs to be wide enough to cover the entire titlebar. This makes the resize handle and tab title move around like crazy," Holwerda writes.
"To me, it seems like Apple had heard that 'Chrome has tabs on top,' but instead of just being honest and admitting that Google got it right, they set a goal for themselves to make as many arbitrary and useless changes as possible so they could still claim they were innovating. All these changes resulted in this botched and confusing tabtitlebar abomination that not only looks horribly out of place on both Mac OS X and Windows, but is also a functional disaster," Holwerda writes. "I hope Apple's Safari engineers recover from this monumental design frak-up quickly, because if this stays the way it is, I won't be using Safari on my Mac anymore."

MacDailyNews Take: It's highly likely that we use the Safari web browser more than, or at least as much as, any living person. 16, 18, and even more hours per day. When the very first thing we did after the first day with Safari 4 Public Beta was to fire up the Terminal to nuke the poorly-thought-out tabs, restoring them back under the Bookmarks Bar where they belong, and re-enable the blue loading bar behind the URL, then there's a problem.
Hopefully, Apple is listening: Rethink and rework the current default Tabs in Safari 4 Public Beta before the final release. They suck enough to have come out of Microsoft.
Holwerda doesn't need to junk Safari 4, he just needs to do this:
$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4TabBarIsOnTop -bool NO
$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4IncludeToolbarRedesign -bool NO
$ defaults write com.apple.Safari DebugSafari4LoadProgressStyle -bool NO
So that Safari 4 Public Beta looks and works like this:

i agree... and had already implemented the Terminal commands necessary to return to a more coherent Tab system where the tabs are not divorced from the Window they are related to be such a distance as when they are put on the title bar. The quarter inch of screen acreage is not as important as maintaining that immediate connection.
I also disliked the resizing of the tabs as you added tabs... returning to the previous method solved that as well.
Seeking out the rotating activity circle at the end of the URL address space to indicate loading time was also a problem... it is hard to find. So I returned to the blue barometer bar as well. Much better. I still get the phenomenal speed of Safari 4 but the better, not new and improved, User Interface of Safari 3.
One thing that is still lacking, though is the reload, stop loading button that had been moved to the URL address field... it is not available to be added to the Tool Bar. RATS.

I don't mind the tabs, frankly. Meanwhile, that browser is scary fast. How'd they do it? Stuff just pops on screen. It's many times faster than IE7 on WinXP. Stable, too.

I also think that the relocation of the tabs is not an improvement. I seem to have gotten used to the fact that the spell, preview, and post buttons grow with zoom, tho - and wouldn't change it. Even if you did tell me how to do so . . .
I think that at some point it would be good to revert back to Safari 3.x and remind myself exactly what the differences are, and how the speed is affected by the switch.

Ok Sword, how do I make the necessary changes from a Windows machine? I know that Macs have Terminal.app but what can I use to fix things with Windows?

You should try FireFox on XP. More friendly and customizable, far more so than Internet Explorer.

I will never touch a beta.

I like the new tabs feature with them on top. I hope they keep it in the release I think it needs to be a choice. It is actually easily selectable via a "tweaks" menu that can be added to your Safari 4...

Turning on the hidden "Tweaks" Menu".

I use Firefox on both my Mac at home and my PC in the office. When I get the Windows Harddisk set up for my Mac (it’s a requirement from the office to connect with their FTP, I will have Firefox there as well.
I tried using Safari when I got this Mac two months ago, but it didn’t seem to be much of an improvement and I had gotten used to Firefox, so I just switched back.

I like it just as it is. Apple produces a beta with less bugs
than Microsoft has with a final product.
The only change, I found was the default
of left and not center on web pages.
fixed with {center} & {/center}

I have heard mixed comments on Safari 4. Some really like it, while others hate it. This is the norm when any major interface change comes down the pike.
I don’t have the guts to install it yet... When I did the Safari 3 beta, it hosed a couple of programs - including one pretty important one. That cost me. It’s the whole updated rootkit that causes the problem.

I’d like to use Safari more, but now only do so on my Ipod Touch 32g. Reason: Bookmarks bar location. I’d rather use a side-bar, and with folders. Maybe I’m missing the process for how to use that option, but without it I’ll continue to use Firefox on my MacBook Pro. The speed and other features of Safari would, without that glitch, move me in that direction.

If you go to View-Customize Toolbar, you can drag the default buttons to it which includes the refresh/stop button.
