Biosite Incorporated Issues Voluntary, Nationwide Recall for Cardiac Marker Test

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — SAN DIEGO, CA, May 5, 2009 — Biosite Incorporated has initiated a voluntary, nationwide recall of one lot of Triage® Cardiac Panel. The test is used by healthcare professionals as an aid in the diagnosis of myocardial infarction (heart attack). The product has been recalled due to reports of low recovery of quality control samples containing Creatine Kinase MB (CK-MB), troponin I and myoglobin on the affected lot. Although there have been no reported issues of patient misdiagnosis associated with this lot to date, low recovery may lead to reporting of falsely low values for CK-MB, troponin I and myoglobin. A root cause investigation has been initiated.
The recall is limited to the Triage® Cardiac Panel, Catalog No. 97000HS, Lot #W44467B. Biosite Incorporated has notified its customers via overnight mail and has instructed them to discontinue use of the affected lot and discard any remaining product from the lot that is on hand. The identified lot was distributed to clinical labs in the United States between January and February 2009. Replacement product will be provided to clinical labs with remaining inventory of this affected product lot.
Biosite Incorporated has reported the action to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
As is noted in the package insert, the results of the Triage Cardiac Panel should not be used as absolute evidence of myocardial infarction and should be evaluated in the context of all the clinical and laboratory data available.

Swine Flu ‘Pandemic’ Martial Law Passes MA Senate

‘While Massachusetts residents were sleeping, our Legislature rushed through a bill- in response to the recent ‘Swine flu’ outbreak.
This bill has been on the shelf but (the) state government felt this was the perfect time to slip this bill through.
What is the big deal about the bill- S18? It gives the Governor power to authorize the deployment and use of force to distribute supplies and materials.
It gives local authorities the permission to enter private residences for investigation and to quarantine individuals.
Basically during any ‘emergency’ our state can and will declare martial law; you lose your Constitutional rights.

‘It took corporate media swine flu hysteria to ram through a martial law bill in Massachusetts . The Massachusetts Senate has unanimously passed a pandemic flu preparation bill that has languished in the Legislature before the recent ‘swine flu’ outbreak.
The 36-0 vote today sends the measure to the House. Both branches have taken it up in past years, but have not been able to agree on the details.
The new Senate version would allow the public health commissioner - in a public health emergency - to close or evacuate buildings, enter private property for investigations, and quarantine individuals.
The bill specifically mandates the following:
(1) to require the owner or occupier of premises to permit entry into and investigation of the premises;
(2) to close, direct, and compel the evacuation of, or to decontaminate or cause to be decontaminated any building or facility, and to allow the reopening of the building or facility when the danger has ended;
(3) to decontaminate or cause to be decontaminated, or to destroy any material;
(4) to restrict or prohibit assemblages of persons;
(5) to require a health care facility to provide services or the use of its facility, or to transfer the management and supervision of the health care facility to the department or to a local public health authority;
(6) to control ingress to and egress from any stricken or threatened public area, and the movement of persons and materials within the area;
(7) to adopt and enforce measures to provide for the safe disposal of infectious waste and human remains, provided that religious, cultural, family, and ! individual beliefs of the deceased person shall be followed to the extent possible when disposing of human remains, whenever that may be done without endangering the public health;
(8) to procure, take immediate possession from any source, store, or distribute any anti-toxins, serums, vaccines, immunizing agents, antibiotics, and other pharmaceutical agents or medical supplies located within the commonwealth as may be necessary to respond to the emergency;
(9) to require in-state health care providers to assist in the performance of vaccination, treatment, examination, or testing of any individual as a condition of licensure, authorization, or the ability to continue to function as a health care provider in the commonwealth’ - Bill 122460

Watching channel 2 in Los Angeles, they are providing live aerial coverage of the fire. Many homes burning, at least 1 dozen. No fire apparatus visible and only two helicopters seen. One looks like a firehawk and the other a bell 412.

Fire is now burning all over the place with extremely long range spotting into neighborhoods that are getting established in landscaping and homes and even the windward side of the fire has become very active and is spitting out spot fires downwind on the western margin of the fire area.
Fixed-wing are still grounded due to high winds.

BREAKING NEWS: Jesusita Fire, 6:30 p.m. UPDATE
6:30 p.m. UPDATE: The Jesusita Fire has over run it’s perimeter and is now burning into the Mission Canyon and San Roque Canyon areas of Santa Barbara. At this time there is no containment, and multiple structures have been lost. KEYT has confirmed reports that structures in the area of Palomino Rd have burned. KEY News will continue to monitor this breaking news situation.
The public can call the Jesusita Call Center at 681-5197.
Residents with any information about how the fire may have started can call a fire tipline at 686-5074.
Red Cross has set up a Red Cross Shelter at Dos Pueblos High School, located at 7266 Alameda Avenue in Goleta.
The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department has issued the following MANDATORY evacuation order for the following areas due to the changing conditions of the Jesusita Fire.
MANDATORY EVACUATIONS
•The mandatory evacuation order has been expanded to include: San Roque and Foothill Road South to State Street (Western boundary), from State Street to Micheltorena, Micheltorena North to the end of the road extending to Alameda Padre Serra.
•The overall mandatory evacuation order areas now includes: Morada Lane (Western boundary) and Ontare North to Camino Cielo, Foothill Road and Morada to San Roque, San Roque South to State Street (Western boundary), State Street to Micheltorena, Micheltorena North to the end of the road, extending to Alameda Padre Serra, Alameda Padre Serra East to Sycamore Canyon Road (Eastern boundary), North on Sycamore Canyon to HWY 192 West to El Cielito.

What do “Evacuation Warning/Advisory” and “Mandatory Evacuation Order” Mean?
Evacuation Warning/Advisory: Residents are strongly encouraged to make arrangements to leave their homes and seek shelter out of the advisory area. Evacuation Warnings/Advisories can turn into a Mandatory Evacuation at a moment’s notice. There is no set rule as to how long a Warning/Advisory cold take. There is always the possibility that a situation may require an immediate mandatory evacuation without an evacuation warning/advisory. Please make sure that you prepare to evacuate at a moment’s notice having your belongings ready, including pets and/or other animals. Know the routes you wish to take, by pre planning. Information as to how to plan for an evacuation can be obtained by calling the Red Cross at (805) 450-5921. If you leave your home during an Evacuation Warning/Advisory, you may not be allowed back to your home if it turns into a Mandatory Evacuation.
Mandatory Evacutation: Evacuate your home immediately. Once a mandatory evacuation has been ordered please evacuate your home immediately.
•Once you have left your home you will not be allowed back until the danger has passed.
•Emergency vehicles will be entering the area. Obey all directions given by law enforcement and fire personnel.
Fire Status:
•At approximately 1:45 p.m. a fire began in the Cathedral Peak area. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
•The fire response is being administered by a Unified Command consisting of the Santa Barbara Fire Department, Santa Barbara County Fire Department, Montecito Fire, and the US Forest Service.
•A large animal evacuation center has been established at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara.
•A small animal evacuation shelter has been established by the Humane Society on Overpass Road. For more information call 681-4332.

USDA today announced a special three-week sign-up for farmers in the process of converting to organic farming to receive technical and financial assistance through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs/eqip/) (EQIP). Today’s announcement sets aside $50 million out of the $1 billion EQIP program for a special three-week sign-up for farms converting to organic production, farms expanding their organic production, or existing organic farms who desire conservation support to reach even higher levels of environmental performance. The sign-up period begins Monday, May 11 and goes through Friday, May 29. Six core conservation practices (conservation crop rotation, cover cropping, integrated pest management, nutrient management, rotational grazing, and forage harvest management) are being made available to transitioning organic farmers on a nationwide basis. New Crop Payment Decision Tool Available

The Agricultural and Food Policy Center at Texas A&M University has released new decision aid software (http://www.afpc.tamu.edu/models/acre/index.php) that will help crop producers assess the risk of receiving farm program payments. The tool will help producers decide whether to continue receiving counter-cyclical payments (CCP) triggered during times of low prices, or opt for a revenue-based payment known as Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) triggered by low prices and/or yields.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) will hold a series of listening sessions on the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). The meetings will take place next month in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Washington state. ‘USDA needs to hear directly from our stakeholders as we work together to create an animal disease traceability program we can all support,’ said Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. ‘I encourage individuals and organizations to voice their concerns, ideas and potential solutions about animal identification, by either attending these listening sessions or submitting comments online.’ If you are unable to attend a listening session, you can also submit feedback online (http://animalid.aphis.usda.gov/nais/feedback).
Food Supplements May Keep Poultry Parasites at Bay

Poultry infected with the parasite Eimeria maxima usually develop avian coccidiosis, a disease estimated to cost producers globally more than $1.2 billion every year. So Agricultural Research Service (ARS) immunologist Hyun Lillehoj has been working with colleagues in ARS and around the world to find dietary supplements that strengthen the poultry immune system. The researchers found that chickens that consumed ground green tea for two weeks prior to parasitic infection produced significantly fewer fecal E. maxima oocysts than the control group.

EQIP Organic Initiative

USDA has announced $50 Million for a new initiative to meet the Obama Administration’s promise to encourage more organic agriculture production. Funding for the initiative is being made available as part of the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP). Organic producers may also apply for assistance under general EQIP. Under the Organic Initiative required minimum core conservation practices will be determined by specific resource concerns. The practices are: Conservation Crop Rotation; Cover Crop; Nutrient Management; Pest Management; Prescribed Grazing; and Forage Harvest Management. States must consider using any appropriate practice that meets the resource concern on a particular operation. Applications received from organic producers or producers in transition to organic farming will be accepted under this initiative between May 11 and May 29. The 2009 Organic Initiative will be administered by the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Interested producers should visit their nearest USDA Service Center to determine eligibility.
Proposals are due May 29, 2009.

CSREES requests applications for the Integrated Research, Education, and Extension Competitive Grants Program—Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) for fiscal year (FY) 2009 to develop research and extension projects aimed at improving the watershed health of grazing land watersheds across the Nation. CEAP seeks to fund projects that evaluate the effects of grazing land conservation practices, especially with respect to understanding how the suite of conservation practices, the timing of these activities, and the spatial distribution of these practices throughout a watershed influence their effectiveness for achieving locally defined watershed health goals.
Proposals are due July 1, 2009.

Illinois’ USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will offer a new state component under the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP)called the Conservation Innovation Grant (CIG) program. The CIG program is designed as a competitive grant option to stimulate creation and adoption of new conservation approaches and technologies that protect and enhance natural resources. As a sub-set of EQIP, CIG strives to speed the transfer and use of the type of technologies and methods that show promise in solving Illinois’ top natural resource problems.

Testosterone gel products (AndroGel 1% and Testim 1%)

FDA notified healthcare professionals that it will require two prescription topical testosterone gel products, AndroGel 1% and Testim 1%, to include a boxed warning on the products’ labels after receiving reports of adverse effects in children who were inadvertently exposed to testosterone through contact with another person being treated with these products. Despite the currently labeled precautions, FDA has received reports of eight cases of secondary exposure to testosterone in children ranging in age from nine months to five years. Since that time, additional reports of secondary exposure have been received by the agency and are presently under review. Of the fully reviewed cases, adverse events reported in these children included inappropriate enlargement of the genitalia (penis or clitoris), premature development of pubic hair, advanced bone age, increased libido and aggressive behavior. The gels are approved for use in men who either no longer produce testosterone or produce it in very low amounts. Both products are applied once daily, to the shoulders or upper arms. FDA has provided recommendations and precautions to minimize the potential for secondary exposure.

Children’s Hooded Jackets with Drawstrings Recalled by Jason Evans Associates Due to Strangulation Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Children’s Hooded Jackets
Units: About 1,300
Importer: Jason Evans Assoc. LLC, of Hewlett, N.Y.
Hazard: The jackets have a drawstring through the hood which can pose a strangulation hazard to children. In February 1996, CPSC issued guidelines (pdf) to help prevent children from strangling or getting entangled on the neck and waist drawstrings in upper garments, such as jackets or sweatshirts.
Incidents/Injuries: None reported.
Description: The recalled children’s jacket has a drawstring through the hood. They were sold in boy sizes 4, 5, 6 and 7 in colors black/grey. The RN number 30842 printed in the center back neck and style number 1708 is printed on the hangtag on the center back neck.
Sold by: Burlington Coat Factory from September 2006 through April 2009 for about $17.
Manufactured in: Pakistan
Remedy: Consumers should immediately remove the drawstrings from the jackets to eliminate the hazard or return the garment to either the place of purchase or to Jason Evans Associates for a full refund.
