NEW YORK (AP) -- Neither "New" nor "Classic," Coke is simply itself again.
Two decades after adding the designation, the Coca-Cola Co. is removing the word "Classic" from its prominent location on the flagship cola sold in the U.S., a company spokesman said Friday.
"The reason for being, for classic as a descriptor, has all but disappeared," spokesman Scott Williamson said.
The "Classic" tagline -- right under the script Coca-Cola logo -- was added in 1985, when the company introduced a formula that consumers called "New Coke." New Coke never caught on and was sold sparingly until it was dropped in 2004.
Coke Classic is the leading soda brand in the world. About 1.7 billion cases of Coke Classic were sold in the U.S. in 2007, according to Beverage Digest. The trade journal reported the removal of the "classic" name earlier Friday.
Williamson said Coca-Cola decided to make the change as it launches a new global marketing campaign it's calling "Open Happiness." He said it was not an appeal to younger consumers, although the company has said before it wants to appeal to younger drinkers as soda sales decline in the U.S.
"Taking it off will modestly contemporize the brand because, to some people, classic doesn't sound youthful and contemporary," Beverage Digest Editor John Sicher said.

My son would probably not agree with you. He was nineteen when he was first deployed. He would get so upset because those over 21 got to get off the ship at ports. They made the young ones stay on the ship and drink sodas:’) (which was fine with me).
In my opinion, Diet Rite Cola is far superior in taste to Diet Coke. Diet Rite Soda has no sodium, no calories, and no aspartame, which causes headaches. It is harder to find in the stores, but it is excellent.
I love diet Dr. Pepper, but am waiting for them to stop using aspartame, which is poison.
LOL
I thought it was dropped back in the fall of 1985, I had no idea they kept it around for almost 20 years.
Yes. The birch beer. Bought some root beer today.
It should be also noted that within a year of Coke Classic coming back that Coke's market share over Pepsi was actually BIGGER than it had been before new Coke.
Another interesting piece of trivia is that Ty Cobb ("The Georgia Peach") was an early and major shareholder in Coca Cola, this made him an incredibly wealthy man in an era when retired athletes often died penniless.
you can get Mexican Coke in glass bottles in Texas!
Coca Cola bottled in Mexico is made with cane sugar and is delicious. It comes in tall skinny bottles.
It shows up in Costco stores from time to time where I buy it. I don’t know what other outlets might sell it, but get some if you get a chance.
Unfortunately, the rest of it is toilet water...
Nah. They have water filters everywhere in Mexico. Most of my relatives live down there and they all have water filters in their homes and at their places of work.
You got that right, or from the '60's either. What these kids drink nowadays is too sweet. An old "short bottle" would probably knock them on their keisters.
Has Dr. Pepper not made to NZ? They are the third largest Soda Company.
I didn’t realize that the new Dr. Pepper/Snapple company that Cadbury spun off owned some many notable brands!

“Mmmmmmm, yummy. Dublin Dr. Pepper?”
Hmmmm! hhhmmmm! I think I will take a trip down that way next weekend to stock up. I will get a six pack or two for me Ma and in her eyes I could do no wrong for the rest of the year!
“I rather drink lukewarm used dishwater than Coke.”
If you use Cascade you get the lemon/lime flavoring and shiny white teeth.
Diet Coke is made from the New Coke recipe, sans the fructose.
Coke Zero is made from the classic Coke recipe, sans the fructose :)
I love Zero! I can't stand Diet Coke.
I cannot get Dr Pepper for love nor money here. Neither Mr Pibb. Both were favorites when I lived in Canada.
(Dr Pepper taste like fizzy prune juice — go figure! But it was nice all the same, and went great with Navy Rum!)
Great find! I didn’t know they owned Nantucket Nectars ...I was familiar with the original owners being Brown U [argh] grads and selling their juice, and sundries, off of their boat to customers using the harbor.
The rest of the list is interesting!
