"Yesterday a squall hit downtown that was really wild. Sheets of sideways rain, high winds, the works."

I took a walk downtown during such a weather event. I call it "The day it rained umbrellas."

There were umbrellas everywhere; in trash bins, gutters, under car wheels, and occasionally, presciently still folded in their owner's hands in the rain.

I put my glasses in a pocket, pulled my parka hood tight, and trudged.

I didn’t bother to take out my umbrella.

I’ve seen Mary Poppins way too many times; besides, I like my umbrella. I don’t want it to end up in Ballard.

About 34 years ago I encountered a squall in Santa Barbara that I was not sure I was going to survive. Walking across the UCSB campus, it was raining so hard that even cupping my hands over my nose did not bring me enough air to breathe.

Obviously I made it to safety, but I don't recall exactly how. I only recall the feeling of suffocating, standing up, on a concrete walkway in a very open space.

Most people don't understands trudging.

They want to dash or they stay put until the rain is over.
