About 34 years ago I encountered a squall in Santa Barbara that I was not sure I was going to survive. Walking across the UCSB campus, it was raining so hard that even cupping my hands over my nose did not bring me enough air to breathe.

Obviously I made it to safety, but I don't recall exactly how. I only recall the feeling of suffocating, standing up, on a concrete walkway in a very open space.
